There's a lot of good information on the forum about varieties that do well in cooler zones.  It also depends on whether you are growing in-ground or in containers.  Off the top of my head you can't go wrong with:
1. Mt. Etna types (Sal's-Gene, Hardy Chicago, Takoma Violet, etc)
2. Malta Black
3. Ronde de Bordeaux
4. Florea

I've had Mt Etnas (HC and MBvs), RdB, and Florea survive (modest damage) with winter protection, producing well the next year.  Also Lattarula.  No experience with others.

I've just bought my first fig for planting in-ground in my backyard...New York City zone 7b.  I decided to go with Celeste.  From what I read on-line, it's pretty cold-hardy and flavorful.  I think it's planted pretty regularly in this area.  The other option would have been Chicago Hardy.  Brown Turkey is often planted around here.  But, many of the reviewers said that Celeste had better flavor.  I'm not familiar with the other, rarer varieties.  I wish I had room to plant several and compare.  So, I decided to go with Celeste, which has a good track record in our winters and was relatively easy to find.

Good luck!  Please let us know what you decide and how it does in your area.
