Figs for The Maritime Pacific North West

Hello out there in fig world, wondering if any growers from the PNW could recommend varieties that yield well in our climate. I'm on southern Vancouver Island, and our best variety is Desert King and it ripens only the breba crop. I've just picked my neighbors mature fig tree and got quite a substantial crop. I'm interested in planting a small orchard and would like to grow a few different cultivars to offer at market. Any suggestions?

See http://figs4fun.com/Fig_Links.html  Link No. 321, 338, 371, etc.

If I remember, Burnt Ridge Nursery is in your part of the worl;d, and should have appropriate knowledge.

See http://www.geocities.com/kiwibobg/kiwifruitsalad3  KiwiBob who is interested in fig varieties for the PNW.

You already have the best proven variety Desert King. There are other good variants but the breba crop is either small or if you get some cold nights in the month of May/June, most if not all these brebas will drop. I just visited an Italian fig farmer in Chilliwack & he shared his knowledge on "the issue of getting main crop figs to ripen". He depends mainly on DK and other variants are more subject to weather conditions. Drive around Vancouver in Jan. & you will see lots of unripe figs in the trees. There are lots of fig trees in Vancouver & most likely over 50% are DK.

Thanks for the info. Yep desert king is about the be all end all of large figs crops in our neck of the woods. They are planted all over Victoria as well. You see a few other varieties but non produce like desert king.

I would like to sugest, that many more cultivars, can produce ripe fruits in the PNW,if the grower take the time, and do the work,to completelly eliminate, the breba crop,(on figs that are known, for good main crop)right away when they appear, and only grow one  crop.
Desert King is an exception, because Breba crop,is the crop the fig retain, and the main crop it drops,at the end of Sommer.
Nothing should be done on Desert King, except may be pinching,to form as many new growing tips as possible.
Yet if you plan to grow a full orchard,it will be a lot of Work to Diligently brake off all Breba,on Main crop figs,so your best bet is still Desert King.
One thing is for sure true for you and for me here in New Jersey:
Our Sommers are only long enough,to grow,One crop only.
Best Regards

Well before I could stop her, my wife bought me a "bayernfeige violetta" from the local nursery here near Everett, WA. So I figured what the hell....and to make it interesting we planted it first of August.... so far....so good
