Figs from Seed Questions

  • Jed

A local guy grows trees from seed-all types of trees. But he never knows what type he is growing.
He claims to have fig trees he grew from seed too.

My question is this: is it possible to grow a fruiting fig tree from seed?

I know they whys about fruit tree cloning. But does anyone even experiement with seedlings?

A few people do.  Search on seedling and breeding.  It's complicated  :)

So, it does look like low chance of fig seedlings producing figs.

The seedlings will grow very fast after a germination but the success rate (edible fig production) is uncertain, that is why most people go for cuttings.
Also, the figs most likely will not be true to the variety of the seed parent.

However you could get a new legendary fig from it. You never know what you might get. That one seed could hold so much potential, it will take time to identify the figs.
