Right now I only have 3 kinds in ground; Chicago Hardy, Texas Everbearing, and one that I think is a Brown Turkey. They are 2 year old trees, so I protected them this year. But the TE and BT were cuttings from big local trees, both of which thrive unprotected. There is also a large Alma (I think) near me that no one does anything with and it never dies back.
Also, keep in mind that Des Arc is probably warmer than were I am. We are just into the foothills and zone 7, whereas Des Arc is flatland and I would guess, zone 8.
