Figs in Grenada

I just returned back from a long trip in the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Grenada.

While driving up the mountainous roads in Grenada I spotted a large fig tree.

As I stopped to look at it, the owner was there I asked him is this your tree? he said yes. Do you know what it is?. is it poisonous?
He was picking them under ripe and trying to eat them.
I had to explain to him the what it is. The name fig is used for bananas in the Caribbeans. He said that he got it from someone not knowing what it was and it's only 2 years old. The trees grow and bear throughout the year's there.
Main problem is growing them in a spot where it has good drainage.

Welcome home Bass. Your new friend looks like a Yankees fan. LOL
How was the fig? Did you taste any or bring back any cuttings?

Bass, how did they taste? On my way to Jamacia in a few weeks. I've got a fig hunt excursion planned.

The fig tasted good, but not something worth getting caught bringing back. There were several trees on the island all with the same variety.

In Trinidad there are several large fig trees, some I brought a few years ago and seems to do well. I'm working with a few commercial growers there and I'll be sending several varieties there in a few months.

Dennis, it will be very rare to see any figs there or anywhere in the Caribbean. You'll find some mangoes, star apple, golden apple and sapodillas at this time of year in the Caribbean.

Bass maybe a future fig enthusiast .

Bass,

thanks for the great post!
