Figs in Michigan

My uncles fig tree in Sterling Heights , Michigan .
He is not sure what the variety is but says the fruit is greenish yellow with red interior and has huge breba crop that starts maturing around July 15 .
The main crop drops , so I think it might be Desert King . Anyone able to identify this ? I will try to post photos of the mature fruit when I get some.
The tree is loaded with fruit .

Yes it is Desert King.
Is your uncle protecting it from cold,by any means,:bury cover with blankets etc?

Thanks Herman ,

Yes Herman he grows the trees on a 45 degree angle and supports with 2x4s and in fall removes the 2x4 and weighs the branches down with cement blocks and covers with old carpets and a tarp.

This tree has at least 8 inch trunk

John, that is a pretty amazing feat for Michigan! I didn't know we could grow them in the ground to that height here. Wow!
The way he winterizes the figs is pretty clever. If that is your uncle in the picture, he looks very proud of his trees.
Rafed, look out! You may have another contender for King of Figs in your city!  ;)

Anniebee,

This is an all out battle now! LOL

John,
Where in Sterling heights is he?
I would like to meet him. I live in Sterling Heights. Maybe I can offer him a couple little figlets.

John, great pictures. Good inspiration for those of us in cold climate areas.

Planted at a 45 degree angle is how we planted half of our figs. Also close to the foundation on the south side of the house.

For those who have been asking if it's okay to plant figs that close to the foundation, take a look at how close the figs are to the house.

Herman, how is the skin on the Desert King? Can you eat the skin, or is it tough like Brooklyn white?

Bob

Hey Rafed ,

You've got mail.

Bob:DK,is superior to Brooklin wht in all respects.

I will try to get some photos in the fall of the actual winterizing process that he uses . He has 4 trees in total , and all of them are planted right against the house . The other 2 are on the other side of the house .

John

Any cuttings available from that one?

Just an update ,

I got a call from my uncle ( I am in Toronto ) and he has been picking no less than 50 figs a day for the last few days . If I could pick 5 a day I'd be thrilled.
He also has a black fig variety on the other side of his house which matures late august which is about 1/3 the size of this tree.
Rafed it seems now is the time to go by if you can .

John

Thanks John,

I'll be out of the truck for about another week but will be taking the family out for a few days. I was planning on getting in touch with your uncle sometime soon.

Today and tomorrow is catch up time the yard.

I will let you know when the time comes.
