Figs in shade?

  • JR

I'm a newbie here - love the forum!!

I have a question:

I live in California, Zone 15 of Sunset Western Gardener, and half of my land is loose soil & sunny, other half is clay and filtered shade.  I'm able to grow apples, plums, pears, loquats, olives and peaches with no attention given.  Am also able to grow paw-paw, sapote, citrus and jujube with a bit more tending.

I currently have just 1 established fig tree (probably black mission) and am looking to concentrate more on figs.... does anyone have any suggestions as to the variety of fig that may do well in the shadier parts (with clay soil) on my property?

Thanks!

JR, welcome to the forum.  The search function works very well and I use it a lot for information that I thought I had read about previously on the forum.  I was able to find this thread which should address your issue:

This is the shadiest tree I have ever seen, that is productive anyway. I think it is the Eastern Brown Turkey that is often differentiated in fig guides from Celeste by having a red eye prior to ripening. My plants have not been very vigorous so maybe clay soil would not be very good. If I were you I would try one of the Mt. Etna figs because they are tough and adaptable.

Welcome.

JR, Welcome from another Californian!

Figs love sun, but sometimes younger ones like partial shade.  Not sure what zone 15 is, but if you get snow, some varieties do better than others in freezes.

Good luck!

JR, welcome to the forum

I live in zone 6 illinois so i look for cold hardy kinds of figs. now on my tiny sliver of land i have a few trees that i want to get rid of due to the fact that there just isnt enough sunlight. in a part of my yard that gets morning sun but afternoon shade or i guess you could call it filters shade do to large maples i have a hardy chicago fig that has done very well there. I know our zones are differant but i hope this may help.   Pics below
