figs in the Caribbean

I'm currently in Trinidad and Tobago. My 3rd visit to this lovely island. I have brought several figs to try out down here and this time I went to check on them.
I planted some at this valley in central Trinidad where a relative has a large collection of fruit trees at his 240 acres property.
Here's some views of the place. It's a nursery/recreation area as well as someone's backyard.

Here's the fig I brought down 3 years ago. The tree is now about 6' tall. This is the Barada variety.

Figs produce through out the year in the Caribbean. However you never get one large crop at once. You can pick a couple figs every few days through out the year.

Bass,

Hope your enjoying yourself. Your not missing anything here accept for the snow.
One would dream of having a backyard like that, But to some they are true.
God bless them.

I would rather pick a couple every few days rather than just one big bunch.
Keep it going all year round.

Take your time coming back and when you do, come back safely.

Hi Bass,
thanks for taking the time to take and post pictures.
All i can say about that property is WOW !
May you have a safe journey.

Bass, hope you  are having fun

Incredible! Enjoy that tropical weather! :-)

Best time for us (North-USA) fig people to take a vacation seems
to be during winter time. Hmmm, I wonder why?!

I found what konaken posted in ripening order interesting even tough most of us don't have those climate conditions but the effects of different elevations might apply to some growers on the forum. Also the trees being able to thrive even though they do not go dormant every year. Is this Ken Love? If so thanks for all your research efforts

Too bad your list isn't applicable to Hawaii.  We have a different order every few hundred foot difference in elevation. At low elevations (200 to 500) I have to harvest   year around, every other day .. Trees only go dormant once  every 3 or 4 years.

Still in Trinidad for another week. I visited several spots where there are figs, and today I'm over a relative's house who I gave him a couple fig trees last summer. These figs are currently about 2'-3'tall. I always thought that closed eyed figs are the only ones that will do well. However they are currently in dry season in Trinidad with no rain for at least one month. It's good for figs regardless if it's an open or closed eye. Their dry season is about the length of our summers sometimes.
Late varieties for us is not a problem here. Some gardens with soggy soil, I have recommended to them to either plant on a the highest spot in the garden or grow in container with good drainage and that did great. There's no need to move them to storage.
One problem is birds, they are attracted to dark figs more than white figs. netting can definitely help keep them away.

See you soon.

thanks Bass
