I poted up 2 of my figs yesterday too. Now need to run to store and buy more soil and biger pots.

Very nice plants Martin, as yours always are. Do you use the black pots for extra heat? I've resorted to white 5 gal buckets for my young plants, to help the roots stay cooler here. I'm going to test them out before I go to the trouble to plant in ground and then end up with a lot of work if I decide to discard them.

For small plants the black pots i had already from flowers etc over the years i had saved them. The 5 gallon ones i picked up on garbage night as someone threw out 3 of them from azalea's or rodadondrens i forget what was on label.

The small plants don't stay in them very long as they outgrow the 1-5 gallon pots then get put into 10 gallon terra cotta plastic pots i buy as there final size. Next season these will be in there final size pot.

The biggest plants are in 30 gallon pots and some in 15 gallon ones . But i dont move anymore into those size because of limited space for them in garage unless i create more space.

hI Martin,
Is there any benefit /or harm to fruiting, if the plants are put right away into larger pots, or is it better for making figs if they are potted in stages to the biggest pot?

thanks, I really enjoy your informative posts.

Grant the benifit and for me only going into large pot right away is its easier and saves me the steps. From 1g to 2g or 3g then to a 5g then to final pot.

Is there harm in it  - YES/NO.

One can harm roots by overwatering in such a big pot.

Would i reccoment it to NO !

So its actually best to wait to you see roots near drain hole and then go up a size.

I'm sort of the odball here but im use to doing it like that and have never killed plant this way.

Martin, your trees are growing well.  Keep up the good work.  I have to repot some in 2 gallon pots this week.  I have some of my trees in Superoot pots.  I love these pots and bought some more yesterday!  I start most of my trees in these pots and then transfer them to larger plastic containers.  Say is Nero and Barnisotte the same fig?  I got a Barnisotte and all it does is drop figs.  I am thinking of planting it in the ground and see how it does.  cheers,

Dennis i dont know i only have the Nero in first year no fruit this season and never had a Barnisotte, good gosh i dont need another type that drops fruit. This type Nero Bc better taste good in my climate as well as hold its main crop or it goes.

Thanks for the info Martin. I have the bottom of my pots sunk into the ground. So I guess I will wait till the plants go dormant to repot.
