figs liking it in florida

first, here's bellecare nero.  this one struggled badly after the freeze, but it's recovered well.  i still have 4 months left to grow :)

now here's brogliotto nero.  bought from my good friend at figsnstuff last year, he sold it with the caution that it had fmv.  it was a cutting in a cup, and it doesn't look like the fmv did much to deter it :).

this is an alma that was a 3 node cutting 3 months ago.  i don't know why it bushes, but the mother plant is doing the same thing (just on a larger scale).  i'm very impressed with the way this one has grown.

my sals corleone,  in it's first year.  lots of figs, and i think sals does like it hot :).

mary lane seedless, shooting for the sky :).

lsu giant celeste, on the way to living up to its name :).

a quick glance down fig row (i've got about 3 rows like this now, and i expect to run out of room after a fourth.)  then i can start culling the ones that aren't productive :).

and of course, my oldest fig, now it it's second year.  bought as a brown turkey, i have no idea what it really is.  my lsu purple put out virtually identical fruit last year.  i'm hoping to get a good identification on this tree this year.

Looking good Mike, soon enough you will have bushels full of figs to eat. Man I wish I had a piece of land like that would be a dream come true.

i'm going to be looking to work here for 3 to 6 months on assignment, hoping to start next week.  my big project out here is my video sudio, and i'm hoping to be production ready in 3 months (if i get the assignment here).  otherwise, this is all 140 miles from my house in tampa bay, which is just too far to drive.  that's why the place looks so untidy...

Hi Mike,
the Belleclare Nero you sent is growing things just grow slower here the leaves have a nice look to them.  ; )
Thanks for taking the time to post pictures of your plants and look forward to many more !
Gosh being a 140 miles away from some of your plants when you do visit the area you sure must see a lot of growth on them.

Mike those look great, looking forward to seeing pics of your orchid in seasons to come Nice piece of land

Mike those have really taken off! You are going to have one heck of an orchard in another couple years. How are you going to pick figs so far away?---just kidding of course, I'm sure you have it all figured out. Thanks for sharing your pictures.

Hi Mike,

What are you feeding those babies and what kind of soil are they in?  It looks sandy.  Is it?  If so, did you put anything in the planting holes?

Thanks,

Vivian

look under my thread for "planting natalina", you'll see exactly how i plant my figs.  basically, for each tree i'm using 15 gallons of potting soil.  it's not your typical potting soil, it's a cheap bulk mix, and i am mixing a little sand with that as well.   i try to plant 3 figs a week these days.

my problem out here is high ph.  even my water's ph is too high.  lots of natural lime here.  so i try to mix a nice acid plant medium, and i give them frequent feedings of granular fertilizer.  if i were living here, they'd be twice the size, since i could keep them sprayed with micros and use superthrive, etc.  but this is the best i can do from long distance.

i'm hoping to get permanently moved out here next year, so i'll be able to really tend to my plants.  i also have 20 varieties of muscadine grape, and i'm looking to expand my grape plantings.

i'll put up some pics when i get everything cleaned up out here.  right now, i'm just trying to keep everything alive.  i water it, i feed it, if it grows, it grows.   so far i've been reasonably lucky.

Thanks, Mike.

Vivian
