Figs not growing. What can I do?

I have a few figs I started few month ago and they are not growing. They grew only 1 to 2 leaves and then froze. I fertilized them and add some supersthrive but nothing happened. What else can I do ?

thanks

figarita, it happens with some plants when you root cuttings. The plant gets two or three leaves, it loses one or two and is left with one or two leaves and then it stagnates. I had a two or three plants that stagnated from two to three or four months without adding another leaf and then took of with fast growth. I dared not un-root to see if the roots were damaged somehow for fear of losing the plant but most probably the top waited for the root mass to develop to start pushing extra growth. Just keep it in good light and moist and not wet at all to avoid drowning and killing the roots.

What you need at this time is patience and not to make the soil too soggy or too dry.

Same thing happen to my tree, it hasn't grown much if at all. I just left it alone and it started to grow but very slowly. I up rooted it to find very little root growth, but I can say that changed after re-potting it in some UPM.

It is common with some cultivars. Each cultivar grows at a different rate. My Black Jack and peters honey is 5 ft tall and has barely put on any new growth since july. While my Stella is growing like a weed from a small root mass.  What cultivar do you have???

what type of soil are they in? I use slow release fertilizer and they respond better than to liquid one.

I would say that once I added some osmocote one of my trees started putting out green growth so fast that now the top leaves are all bunched up with little room to spread.

Hi Figarita, you said

If that plant was small its not good idea that it was fertilized it can burn young tender roots while superthrive at correct dosage should not has been my experience.
Its quite possible that there was some roots damaged (burned) with the regular fertilizer it sounds you "may" have used and if thats the case now as Akram stated the top growth is now waiting for the root system to further or regenerate some more roots to support it.
This in past has happened to me and if left alone will eventually start to grow when its ready to do so.

I am still pretty new to figs but I have been using Hormex at quarter strength along with a couple of drops of superthrive and liquid seaweed. Also, when I potted up my cuttings, I had the best luck when I used some of my homemade compost (rabbit bedding, chicken bedding, hay, newspaper, and kitchen scraps) along with perlite and potting mix. The ones in compost are growing like weeds, some are ready for 2 gallon pots!

Thanks everyone.

I use a mixture of chicken & caw manure, compost, perlite and potting soil.
The cultivars I have and not growing are: Lampiera ( I have two one is growing and one doesn't and are in the same potting mix), Bourgeasotte grise, St Anthony, Col de Dame Noir, Gross Montreause de Lipari, Blue Celeste( one growing ,one not).Hope my spelling is not that bad :)
I did not start to fertilize them till recently and I used a very weak solution.
Unfortunately I am leaving town for a month and my teenager son  will be responsible for taking care of my plants. I wanted to see them putting new gross before I leave.
May be I'll re-pot them and see what happen.
Pat.
