Figs of Morocco

Morocco seems to be a big producer of fig. They have many varieties. I have attached a pdf file showing different varieties of figs in Morocco. It is in French.

Another nice find Bass, The island im from is closer to Morocco than Portugal it self and I remember eating dried figs from morocco as a kid they were the only ones I actually liked. Thanks for posting

Somewhere there is a good site on Moroccan fig genetics, but I can't locate it just now. I remember because it is the only collection, other than USDA which lists Gazir.

Any idea where Gazir comes from? it sounds Arabic could it be Moroccan?

I saw one reference that said that it translates to "abundance". It does show up, infrequently, in many different parts of the Arab world, so hard to say where it might have originated. Seems to be used, also, as a personal and regional name as far east as Bangladesh. The USDA/UC Davis website lists the origin as being from a couple people in the US, with no information about the provenance further back.

It also shows up in the European Minor Fruit Tree Project as being in a collection in Italy. I had heard it was from Egypt, but have no idea from whence I got that impression.
