Fig's roots?

Hi All,
I'm planning on bringing my cuttings to Thailand for my mom. I talked to her the other day and she said there was a documentary about fig a while ago. The doctumentary (made in Thailand) said that the fig's roots (big tree, plant in ground) will go deep and spread very wide and will kill the other trees around. My mom then told me she doesnt want fig tree anymore!!

I did a little research and it said here that the fig's roots are wide and mostly remain close to the surface, but require a lot of water during hot summer months (which if it's in Thailand, all most all year!)

So my suggestiong to my mom was that we are going to keep the fig in pot and de-roots every few years.

IS that a good suggestion? Is there anything else I should be aware of?
Thanks,
Anya

If you mean Ficus carica, common edible fig, there is NO problem, Roots are fairly shallow, non-invasive and compatible with all kinds of trees.

Yeah, there are many Ficus. x species that their roots can even 'spit-rocks' open.

Thank goodness, it is not so with our docile/fruitful  F.carica fig kind.

I see! I have to tell my mom not to worry :) I'm bringing vdb and unknown (from near my house) that should be no problem!!

We have a little land that my parents still havnt decide to do anything with, my be i'll just tell them to plant the fig inthe middle of it, if they werent sure lol.

Thanks,
Anya

Go for it.

This house in Wilmington is about 100 years old and the fig is probably 30, both are doing just fine.

Thank you for all the input!! it's really great to hear :)

I'm super excited, I'm leaving in a few days and the figs will be traveling in my check luggage to a new (and hot all year) home!

Thank you for sharing this with us.  We were not aware that some figs may cause damage to the foundations of our homes...

I gave the figs to my mom and she's really happy. I told her about the different type of figs, Thanks y'all!!

AuntieB - I did not aware too untill the good people here told me so :)
