Figs started this year

Hi  all, I had one brown turkey fig last year, I started 5 cuttings from that last fall. This spring I started 400 cuttings and about 200 are now fig trees, not great but ok for first time starting figs. I have about 60 types of figs.I also have 70 seedlings from Tom.Many of the cuttings are 5 ft tall. I am building a rootcellar to store the figs for the winter. I take it that I should wait for the fig trees to drop leaves before storing them for the winter. Rex.

What are you going to do with all those trees?

And yes, wait till they go dormant.  But what is your goal?

That's a whole lotta trees !!!  :-)

Hey, Rex, you make me feel like a piker at maybe half that many. I don't know how many varieties I have. Maybe 30 total, and several of most. But to be honest, I really don't know. I've already started giving them way. That's fun too. :)  Fortunately figs can stay outside all year here.

My goal is to grow a significant number of varieties, see what does best here in terms of flavor and productivity, and pass the rest on. I'm forming a list of additional varieties I would be tickled to try.

No doubt about it, this year has been grand fun.

If you trees still have unhardened growth when frost hits it will kill their tops. The snow in October last year set quite a few of mine back, wish I had move them inside earlier.

After reading your post, I feel a littel better about my mere 40 plants lol.

Well you've certainly pulled yourself up by your bootstraps!  Congratulations!

I dont have a goal in mind I just like growing things. I may sell a few on ebay, but I want to have enough figs so I can trade with  other members and give a few away as well. Rex

Would you post pics. of your rootcellar when finished?
