Figs that would do well in a cool coastal California climate?

I posted this on GardenWeb but would also like to get input from this forum too.

A relative of mine is moving to Santa Barbara, California and wants to grow a fig tree there in a container. My first thought was to recommend VDB since it is a high quality fig that is a small tree. But when I checked out weather.com I realized that Santa Barbara has cool summers, usually staying in the 70's. So I'm not sure if it would be hot enough for VDB to ripen properly there.

Does anyone have recommendations for fig varieties that would do good in a container in Santa Barbara?

Thanks,
Joe

My dad grew up on a ranch on what was then the outskirts of  Santa Barbara. My aunt still lives there and has numerous fruit trees, including figs. I'll send her an email.

Thanks for looking into that for me.

I cannot comment on the area, but i do have a VdB going into its 3rd season and its not as a small as some websites selling them say they are.

Its good growing plant and can be as tall as any other of my container grown trees .
Here is picture of it as of today. The main trunk was pruned last season or it would have grown taller.

It makes a HUGE difference, exactly where you are in SB. Close to the water can be fairly mild, but more up-slope in in foothills can be quite toasty.

Martin, thanks for the info on your VDB.

Jon, thanks for the info on Santa Barbara.
