Figs waking up in garage

Good day, had a wonderful Christmas, just finished my coffee. I went out in my garage to check on my winterized figs. To my surprise, I found several figs waking up and leafing out. It was 25 degrees last night and 57 degrees in my garage. Here's a few I found leafing out:

Adriatic JH
Cartegena Negra
Aldo
Murciana
Vern's Brown Turkey
Caucasus 3
Nero
Dwarf Black
Spicewood
GM-176
BV
Red Italian
Toni's Brown Italian
Brown Turkey Not!
Black Jack

cheers!

Dennis it's way to early and that is not enough sleep. LoL

Haven't had any so far.

that's NC for ya :)

I have 2 figs in Los Angeles in pots outside thatand stayed without leaves for 2 weeks and leafing out now. It is quite warm outside and the figs got confused. There are several cuttings I started in October that grow in 1gal pots outside , they have not noticed the December at all.

57°F as a night time temperature might be too high to keep the figs dormant... My figtrees are all in my cellar and it stays under 50°F.
Is there a possibility to open a window to keep it cooler?

I thought 200hrs of dormancy time would be enough, Am I wrong? If they are waking up then get ready to supply plenty of light Dennis. Here in Los Angeles they hardly go dormant. I think most important factor for figs to fruit better is the cold hours, which is minimum 200 hrs. Just my opinion. :CHILL REQUIREMENTS
TYPE OF FRUIT CHILL HOURS

Almond 500-600
Apple 400-1000 (Low chill varieties are less)
Apricot 500-600
Japanese Pear 400-500
Blackberry 200-500
Blueberry (Northern) 800
Chestnut 400-500
Cherry 700-800
Citrus 0
Currant 800-1000
European Pear 600-800
European plum 800-900
Fig 100-200
Filbert 800
Gooseberry 800-1000
Grape 100+
Japanese Plum 300-500
Kiwi 600-800
Mulberry 400
Peach 600-800
Persimmon 200-400
Plum Cot 400
Pomegranate 100-200
Quince 300-500
Strawberry 200-300
Raspberries 700-800
Walnut 600-700

I think the issue in Dennis' case is not whether they've stayed dormant long enough.  Rather it's whether they'll suffer when the new growth is exposed again to frigid temperatures in the months ahead.  If it freezes while those new growth tips are tender and green, probably those parts will die back.  But unless the trees are tiny. it probably won't kill the trees.  But 57F is definitely too warm for them to stay dormant.
Mike

if they stay in garage, they should do ok. NC weather doesn't get to cold. and protected from wind, my trees do not get any damage. dennis is about 3 hrs south of me.

I am definitely with Mike. Plus: Where to put the trees if they leaf out and need light but the garage is dark? Outside is too cold and indoors (house) will also not offer the proper light to produce healthy groth.
So try to slow the waking up process down, Dennis by making it cooler in your garage.

This happens every year for me. We've had goldielocks weather here in Charlotte. Last Friday, it was 68 outside. Today and yesterday, is cold again. My garage is insulated and that's a good thing! Years ago when temps were in the teens outside, my garage was 25 degrees! I have way too many to move outside. But I can open the garage and let the cool air in. My garage also has 2 large windows too. I also have some rooted leafed out cuttings under some grow lights. But those trees leafing out are not in grow lights or daylight. It's the warm outside temps that's making these guys wakeup. So, if it gets too cold in the garage, I'll loose the cuttings.

Right now, its 55 degrees and sunny. My GH is 57 with both vent and door open. And the same is happening there. Some are waking up. I'm not worried just noticing this. Next month we will have ice storms, sleet and snow so winter is not over. So some of these guys will have lots of brebas! I just hope they taste good.

Try putting ice on the pots. there's no way to give them enough light unless you convert your garage to a grow room with HID or lots of fluorescent lights. will you have enough room for all the growth? I agree about opening your garage windows when it's cold.

Dennis,
Is it the same bunch of varieties (more or less) that wake up early each year? A couple of those are ones I am trying here and we have fluctuating winter temps too.

The solution is simple, the figs need to be stored in a colder area. In 8a NC they'd be better off outdoors on the north side of a building in the shade. Add some insulation in the form of leaves or similar. Then cover with a tarp to keep them dry. Lastly make sure no critters can damage them.

In an insulated bldg would be OK. But you need a system of fans to take the temperature down to 32F at night. Then close the bldg by day to maintain it as near freezing as possible.

Having figs wake up now without a greenhouse is too much trouble.

This is frustrating when they do this and mine do as well. I have figs that are still in their complete canopy. I keep telling my VdB it's time to go to sleep and she just smiles and puts out another leaf. The trees on the hill in the back are almost leaf free but the ones under the oak think it's still summer. I was sent 2 dormant air layers (thank you so much Vito) and they are breaking dormancy outside.

I'm sure we will get a cold snap in the next month or so that will finally convince them but I want to do the pruning. I guess that plan will go the way of the rest of the fig plans lol.

Nope Andy, these are different figs. I'm not going to worry about these guys leafing out. Heck in my front yard daffodils are up 4 inches and winter has just begun. Go Figure!

Wow Dennis you are handling this well, some of us would be panicking. lol and you just sipped on some coffee like F it. No wonder you go by Snaglpus, you are one cool cat!

My Kadota which is in the ground, appears to be awakening also....it was probably asleep for a few weeks......its been a dry winter with a lot of sun...good for me, not my hobby..

Forget about the garage, seems like this Lattarolla outside in a large pot doesn't want to go to sleep either.  Strange since it has been an unusually cold winter here in the Hosuton area.  Plenty of nights with temps below 40F, some close to freezing.

I may have put my 1 and 3 gallons to bed prematurely, but before they went to the garage I pulled off all leaves showing any specks or blemishes, leaving a couple plants completely denuded.  Now IDK if "de-leafing" forced them deeper into dormancy, or if they're dead, but those plants stayed bare, while several plants that still had leaves continued making leaves in the dark, cold garage.  If they all survive, that might mean leaves should be removed when they are put into the abyss.
Soni <has a lot to learn.

No, they will be fine. But check on them every night if possible. Slugs will show up at night and sometimes inch worms. Every night I have to kill slug. Slug bait works but creates mold.
