Figs Where to buy/ where not to buy

Ty Ty -
I think Ty Ty can go to the top of the DO NOT BUY FROM LIST unless im mistaken.

Willis Orchard +
I have bought a tree from Willis orchard they turned out sending me the wrong one, 2 years later when i knew it was the wrong one they sent me a free replacement with no troubles. this was my only time dealing with them.

Hirts Garden
I myself have bought only 1 item from Hirts which was a hardy chicago fig tree. I was and am happy with it. but i have read that others may have had problems.

Stark Bros.
I have never bought figs from them i thik they just started selling them with in the past few years. i have however bought alot of plants from strawberries, blue berries, and some other fruit trees that i am very happy with.

I have bought bare root fruit trees from Stark Brothers several times always pleased.
I had two trees die a few months after i got them years ago and they replaced them no questions asked .

I have an order in with them now for several fruit trees to be deliverd in the spring .

hmm.. i only bought from two vendors so far. they are encanto farm for the Panache cuttings. and East Coast Figs for my VdB, Paradiso Gene, and Kathleen's Black. other's are all trade and was sent to me from generous members.

i'm willing to grow from cuttings and don't mind waiting 2-3 year for the figs. what little trees i have provides me with enough figs and i look forward to the figs from the tress i grew from the cuttings.

I just purchased 2 Panache fig trees for $19.99 each at http://www.groworganic.com the website for Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply in California. I'll let you know what I think when I get them, as I have never ordered plants from them before. They have a few other fig varieties available too.

Brugmansia in Quebec (for Canada) has sent me decent plants, he's a little on the expensive side but the trees have grown well so far, but I won't see fruit on them until this year so I am going on good faith that they are as labeled, I have no reason to doubt him, I will have to update when I have seen the fruit but I would recommend them.

this is good keep it up lets get a good list here of where to go and where not to go for the newer members comming on.

I am looking to get 1 or 2 norland figs from raintree, i will let every body know how it goes. also getting anything pics when they come in to see what money is buying as well would be great. i almost fell for ty ty 4 years ago. im glad i didnt but came close.

Stark bros is good for alot of thing but like i said i never have gotted figs from there. they are only a couple hours drive from me i am planning on going somtime but have been planning for years

I have bought 2 Panaches and two Lattarula from Edible Landscaping and I am very satisfied with the product I received. They have not fruited yet but had a little fig and I am certain it was not a Brown Turkey. LOL

Since some people like to buy on ebay as well, don't trust other places or want different varieties that are not stocked, this a link to a thread about ebay vendors that people here have been happy with:

This last fall I bought from Durio Nursery in LA and Just Fruits and Exotics in FL.  I was satisified with the fig trees, packaging and shipping.  I would recommend either one.

I sell on ebay a have had no complains I sell what I have on stock. And it is as I list it. Unknowns are listed as such with discription. Honesty is the best way to do bizz. If it is a known kind I list were it was obtained from if not from my own tree.

I've bought from Joe Morle at http://www.figtrees.net. Nice size trees and perfect packing.
I was pleased with my order from him.

I also purchase  a VDB from groworganic.com the website for Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply, got it last month. good packaging about 18 inchs high

I actually had a good experience with TyTy, but they're expensive. Trees of Joy is great. Anyone on the forum is first on my list to trade with. I got a great fig from Bob Cantor last year. I have had good experience with Hirt's (and Wellspring in FL, I think?). My tissue clones seem to grow faster. I would also recommend Edible Landscaping.

I found this thread extremely informative. I have ordered from EL and Peaceful Valley because of info offered here. Thanks!

Rolling River Nursery is another good source.

Have always had great service and healthy fig trees through Burnt Ridge, Rolling River, and Joe Morle's Italian Figs. Burnt Ridge (like Edible Landscaping) often has an inventory of fig varieties which may not be posted on their website or in the catalogue. They will tell you what they have in stock if you call them directly.

Leon, I had the opposite experience with Burnt Ridge. Ordered an Panachee and VdB, received 2 VdBs. I wrote them and they sent a replacement Panache which was NOT a Panache. I think it's an Adriatic but not sure. I gave up trying to get the correct tree from them. Bought a Panachee from Home Depot. You guessed it, NOT a Panache. Again I think it's an Adriatic, green with dark red center. It's excellent so I didn't take it back. I bought another from HD but it was fruiting so I could see it WAS a Panachee. That was a hard tree to get! So far the opossium have enjoyed all the fruit produced by it...I haven't had one yet.  I'm building a cage around it this year so I can get some fruit.

Sue

Hi Sue:
I'm surprised that HD carried Panache. If you want a real one, I can A/L you one this season. Mine came from Watts.

I have purchased many plants from one green world and all trees and plants healthy. did not need to ship because we live about an hour away. would buy again and will this summer.

A Ty Ty tidbit.

About ten years ago I would make a trip through south GA about once a month. The countryside of rural GA is covered with local nurseries and most are a pleasure to visit, which I would do whenever time permitted.

After passing through Ty Ty (the town) a few times I stopped at the nursery. From the street there was nothing to set it apart from all the other nurseries in the area. It was actually quite small and although they quite a few varieties of plants, they had only small quantities of any one kind. I've often wondered how they support their web site with the small inventory I saw.

The people I saw there were actually rather rude. Reminded me of a used car lot the way they pushed their products. Normally people in the rural south are fun to talk with.

I was looking for a fig tree and ended up purchasing one there. To my great pleasure it has turned out to be a good tree. It was labeled Improved Celeste and the figs look and taste just like other Celeste I've experienced.

I haven't been through that area in some time so I don't know if they've expanded or not. Based on my experience I never stopped there again nor bought anything else from them.

I bought an LSU purple and Celeste from isons. It took 2 weeks for them to ship it, but once they did, I got them within 2 days. Both look good. Both about 3.5 feet tall.

Don't forget Encanto Farms.  A huge selections of figs and bananas, good prices and always true to name.  The owner doesn't really know anything about figs, though  ;)

I ordered two fig trees (Panache and Violette de Bordeaux) from Peaceful Valley Farm and Garden Supply (grow organic.com). This was a nice valentine surprise, because I thought they would arrive sometime in March.
They were securely packed (so secure that it took me about 20 minutes to open one box). I am so pleased. I can't wait to plant them outdoors.
I would order from them again, maybe raspberries next time.

Smaritza,

I ordered the same exact trees from PV and live on Long Island. Based on your post things look good.

Thanks,

Steve

It looks to me like Peaceful Valley gets their stock from Dave Wilson Nursery. Priced cheaper than my local nursery.
