Filacciano

Just got home early from my outing. Truck in the shop, looks like a turbo problem again.
So I'll be sitting for about a week, wont get to it till mid next week. That's going to hurt. Oh well, more time with the figs I guess. LOL

Did a walk around to do a quick survey and these cool temps are really effecting things. The trees act as if it is Fall and some of the fruit don't look right. Looks like plenty will go to waste.

So much for Global Warming.

I found this fruit hanging and was over ripe. A bit watered down but was sweet and fruity and had a hint of raspberry to it.

I think it will get better with age.

Please enjoy the pictures,

Another nice looking fig Rafed. Sorry to hear about your truck.

Rafed: Very nice, thanks for sharing.

Best,
Tam

Nice Rafed, I think everyones weather and seasons are messed up, no frost at all this year on the border 9B/10A, very unusual. Extra cold in some areas, extra warm in others, rains and floods in some, and droughts in others. Really messed up. of

Nice looking fig.......

The weather geniuses promised a heat wave around 8/20, now they are saying no heat wave and even cooler temps than all previous summer by late August. Where is the warmth our figs need so much???

You are the king of posting figs I have never heard of :)

You have a second.

Rafed,
Is there any difference you know of between this and the Filacciano Bianco I have?

Thanks for posting, Rafed, and sorry to hear of the truck problems.  I work very hard but don't envy the life of an independent trucker!  But my farm income can be even less predictable than yours.  Good this year.  The last time we had a great year it was followed by the lowest hay prices I remember in over 30 years!

Thanks everyone,

Wills,
Actually, this has been mentioned before by others. Not too new;)
Steve (Rewton) has a nice thread on it.

Michael,
I think they are one and the same. I think my source just left out the "Bianco" part.

Harvey,
In the last two and half years I've put over $35k in repairs alone. Did an in frame, new trans, new clutch, new 5th wheel, new turbo and EGR valve, new, new, new.
I have thought about getting a new one or newer "used" one but who's headache am I going to buy?

This truck has 1.25 million miles on it and runs like a rocket with its' 515 horses Detroit Diesel. Been paid off for over two years. Do I need another $1800 a month payment?

What ever the problem is with this truck is going to get fixed and I'll be on the road again.

Till then,
I have work to do with my figs. I have a bunch of plants that need to get packed and prepped for shipping to my friends.

But your farm life isn't easy either. You are always at the mercy of Mother Nature. Hope she is kind to you.

Nice fig Rafed! Wow, I am glad I don't have to maintain a truck like yours. Did you get my e-mail?

Hello Joseph,

I did and I meant to respond but got side tracked and forgot. This one is on me, sorry.

It's an excellent tasting fig!  Nice pic Rafed!

Rafed, good to see you are getting figs off of this one.  My F.B. brebas started to ripen here around the first week of July and were over by the end of the July.  The were very good and I'm sure they will get better.  The test for me is to see whether my in-ground tree will hold onto its brebas over the winter with minimal protection.

This variant did not do well in my zone - southern British Columbia.

@Rafed, Hope better days ahead with the truck.

Rafed,
Sorry about your truck.  I am getting to the point that I don't want anything else with a motor in it since soon enough it will need to be fixed..LOL

You can blame the Jetstream for your(our) weather problems.  It has been stuck in a U shape most of the summer sucking cold air down to the N.E.   They say because the artic has warmed it has screwed up the Jetstream.  I sure hope this is not the new trend.

Still you manage to show us some pretty nice figs.  Are they all container grown?

Rafed,

If you have the time, could you make a list towards the end of the season with what still did well with the cooler weather? You would have a good representation of varieties, might be useful to those in cool climates.

Tough luck on the truck, but it can always be worse.

Kelby,

It would be difficult right now as the figs are acting like it's Fall already. Some of them won't be able to make it the way things looks.

I want to hold off on declaring the Filacciano as being cold hardy. It was one fig so I want to see how the others perform. Still time.

Maybe Michael and Steve can chime in?

The F. Bianco at Gene's old (now defunct) orchard was one of the larger trees there and was never protected in the winter.  The orchard is in zone 7b, I believe. So in terms of viability of the tree it seems to be at least reasonably cold hardy.  What I have been told by Gene and others is that it is also able to hold onto its brebas growing under those conditions too.  However, I would think that none of what I just wrote would have held true for the brutal winter of 2013-14 though.

Thanks for the info, Steve.

Sounds good. I just wondered what still will do well for you with the cooler weather. A lot of what you post I haven't heard of, not that I know much yet or ever will, haha.

Kelby,

Been growing figs for over ten years. Most of my collection is less than six or seven years old.
I still have a lot to learn. This does not come over night.

So hang in there and do the best you can. And have fun with it while you are doing it.

Aloha, Rafed!  I can always count on you to introduce figs that I've never heard of.  They look scrumptious!

Thanks Rafed, that was more deprecating than I meant, but I appreciate it. Keep sharing those figs!
