Filacciano Bianco breba
picked 7-3-13 Not completely ripe - perhaps a day early.
8.5 out of 10 for taste/quality.
Complex and sweet, not figgy at all, very clean yet complicated flavor - light, not heavy at all. Very clean with little after taste. Reminds me of Mary Lane Seedless only more complex.
America's birthday came with a wonderful present for me in the form of my first ripe fig, and boy was it a good one. Nice size and color and the taste was complex and distinct.
Picked a day or so before perfect ripeness I was surprised with how rich the flavor was and how sweet and clean this fig tasted.
This is going to be a fig variety that will have a place in my future orchard.
Early ripening (it's a San Pedro) and with good cold hardiness - according to Gene Hosey, the - "Wood is more resistant to frost damage than others;".
I'm very pleased as I'm trying to round up the most cold hardy varieties I can find.
I'll admit to a possible "jumping of the gun" here as I've only had one fig - there are only a few left to taste still on the tree. The tree is producing a second crop which I'll leave on (a few) just to watch. This is a young tree, and like a lot of my trees this year it's suffering from too much rain and very little sun as this year so far has been dark and damp and all of my figs are way behind schedule and showing signs of stress.
But I'm excited none the less and thought I'd share this with you all.
Happy belated 4th.
