Finally back

  • jtp

Well, I was gone for almost a year from here. Just a lot of bad stuff going on, including the loss of most of my figs due to poor overwintering and hungry rodents. During that period, I moved to Wilmington, NC, which appears to be a great area for fig culture.

My Chris' Unknown from svanessa and Vincenza from rafed were my only survivors from the old bunch. They are looking good so far and I am hopeful. I grabbed a Hardy Chicago and Mission at Lowe's, so the forest is once again growing in numbers. Anyway, glad to be back and I'll look forward to learning more and meeting new friends.

Welcome back John. Life can be difficult at times but we must hang in there and believe. It will all come to pass. I hope your new neighborhood is very good for growing figs and that you do well with them.

Welcome back, John!

Thanks guys. We have a patio area that is a great microclimate. We were picking kumquats off of our small potted tree at Christmas. And I only had to tarp it over for a few nights here and there. The cement is on a South face, so it really absorbs a lot of heat during the day. I've got two figs in the ground just off of the slab and two in pots on the patio right now.

Yeah Noss, I think my figs like it right now, but that patio may be a broiler this summer. I'll have to experiment a bit. At least I know the winter spot for them. Thanks.

Well, further research has brought another culprit to light in my collection's demise - my own stupidity. I had planted them near my tomatoes, so nematodes could have likely contributed to the massacre. Lesson learned.
