Finally from Coir to Cups

First try was paper towel method. I ended up clipping a lot of the cutting due to mold......

That didn't work for me.  So I made a post... @nycfig & @figpig_66 suggested (Thanks Guys) use a 10% Bleach solution. 1/4 Cup Bleach and 2 1/4 water. I took a toothbrush and scrubbed them all with the solution. That did the trick!!

I read so much about coir I decided to use it. I soaked the Coir with a solution of Foxfarm Big Bloom 4 tablespoons to a gallon. After soaking it squeezed  until no water dripped
and covered them up.

Getting the cups ready.. I got tired of waiting for the zippo lighter to heat up the bit.

I tried different ratios of Perlite to Pro-Mix BX I settled on much less then this

I moistened the mixture using a spray bottle

9 Containers like this

Smallest Roots was the Celeste

MBVS largest roots and last to start forming roots

Weighting them.. Thanks nycfig for this tip..

Nice work Sal......keep it up

They can go outside, keep in a partial shade, you have no leaves yet to worry about.
You can try a few if afraid for all. They will be your best growers

Couldn't all the water/moisture potentially evaporate on a hot day?

Sal. Before leaves start to form pop a very small hole in a sheet of plastic wrap squeeze it over the cutting and wrapp over cup. Also once you have roots like you i would get rid of most of perlite and use more coir. I found roots grow more robust in coir. Hole cup will fill with roots. Grate job by the way. i would keep out side in total shade for a while in my experience. Richie

Thanks..Figpig_66

I have more cuttings coming week so I'll try to use Coir through out the next cuttings.

Like a little green house basically? To keep humidity in?

NewB here, but regular on some other forums... interesting your MBVS was last to root.  Mine have pushed leaves but no roots yet, I find hope in your comment that yours ended up rooting well.

Sal - Bravo on using the scale! Very happy to see it.

Congrats on your success! Your roots look fantastic and your potting mix looks perfect!

If your not putting them outside get yourself a clear bin to put them in. IKEA has nice compact tall ones. I believe they're 16" tall and called Samla. They're taller that the clear bins from the Big Box stores. Put some kind of grate in the bin to keep the cups off the bottom. I use the grates that cover fluorescent lighting in drop ceilings. Come in 2' x 4' pieces and cut easily with a pair of snips. HD has them with the drop ceiling tiles.

Open your bin once a day for a few minutes to air out. You can keep them In that spot in the pic, it looks good.

I used my scale for Wine Making , I actually forgot I had 2 Scales. The one I bought from ebay should come in this week also.

I wasn't sure if I needed to put everything in a bin since I would be weighting each cup weekly. I guess the more humid the better?

Hi sal. Do you use the bleaching solution on all cuttings prior to placing them in rooting cups or just for the moldy ones in cups already? No need to rinse with water after the bleach dip?

Nicely done Sal. With roots like those I start with 32 ounce deli cups. I think your cups are too small for the great work you have done

ninamd

You only use the solution once before getting any roots. For example you receive cuttings from a member or ebay, once your cutting arrives that's when you scrub the cutting lightly with the solution using a soft bristle toothbrush. I also dip both ends of the cutting in the solution.

Put paper towels on a table or whatever and let them dry well no rinsing is needed before moving on to the method you choose Paper Towel,Spagnum moss,Coir. This is a preventive maintenance procedure so you don't get that mold to begin with.

So you will have 2 steps if you use my method.

1. Clean and brush cutting use solution. Let them dry well
2. Use your method for root grow to start. Coir,Spagnum Moss,Paper Tower
3 Once you get nice roots you move on to what I call the second stage

Coop951 I figured they were but I have to now run with it or risk breaking roots. I actually had to order these cups from Amazon because I couldn't even find this size in a store.

Thanks sal! :-)

Should I be investing in a Hygrometer for my bin? As it is I see no condensation should I be spraying the walls of the bin with water?

Also cuttings from http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/free-cuttings-7346920?pid=1287156901#post1287156901   I just call it "The Allen"

I watered them for the first time on Monday. I gave them a solution of Foxfarm Bigbloom 0.01-0.3-0.7 the growth after the first watering was incredible.

It's such fun watching them when they are that size. I have some about that size. Every morning at coffee time I have to admire them as I bet you do yours.

Very nice starts you have there.
