this is the FMV-free version found and discussed in another thread from a few years ago?  Looks dee-lish

actually, no :) this is USDA/UCD Black Madeira. I rooted 5 so far. gave all away, or have names of members on it other than 2 i'm keeping. it's slow growing tree, but it's rather clean compare to some of the other figs i have seen. very health otherwise.

Pete,

Very nice fig and pictures. You finally did it
Speaking for its distant relative I keep seeing the same skin shades, bluish on some,  brownish or even almost black on others, the conspicuous white dots appearing still on the yet green skins, then being enhanced once colors go darker, the eye with its almost mandatory syrup drops or tears, the typical  'over sized' neck and finally the rich pulps, in every respect. I am anxious to look at a Californian grown BM done as per the book and if at all possible supported by the waspy favors. Whoever does it, I am confident that he or she  will be as surprised as I was this season..those figs were big!! I was too lazy but next year I will get sizes and weights.,,the other aspect was its continuous 'output' from the early August days all the way through practically all October.

Congratulations Pete, these figs are definitely winners anywhere.

Nice fig, thank for sharing.

Best,
Tam

thanks francisco,

now i know for sure the Black Madeira will grow and ripen here. it's matter of having good weather that will determine the quality of the fig. today, the night temp will drop below 32 degrees for 2nd time this yr. i moved all the Black Madeira inside.

Very nice Pete!

Very nice looking!!

It looks good, but lacking in taste due to lack of heat.

Yes, sure it will grow/ripen and with better weather  you shall have lots of those delicious BM's.
Here, temps still in between 54 and 79ºF, clear skies, shorter days but full of warm sun and some cultivars keep still ripening figs.

Very nice Pete.

Here's my black Madeira. As of today I only had one ripe fig in its first year. It's starting to get chilly at night, not sure if these will ripen or not.

Sas,

You should have knock some of them off earlier in the season. I knocked all the ones that didn't have a chance.. but only 3 ripened this yr.

I'm hoping for our usual hot NC summer next yr. Got others going into 3rd yr, and few in 5th yr. It should be good yr if weather helps.

So what are you suggesting I do now at this late stage. I have the same problem with the small UCD cutting in the ground it's filled with figs. Do you think it matters what I do now?

Sas,

At this point, I doubt it will make any difference. I would just knock of all that doesn't have a chance so tree doesn't spent any unneccessary energy.

Very Nice Fig!!  Why would you need a watermark?

I thought I was going to have so many figs, I was sharpening my knife and waiting for over a month now. It looks like after the first super fig the rest went into suspended animation.
I'm hoping that perhaps next year I get a better chance as these cuttings were started late this year perhaps. I'm still getting a fig here and a fig there from my other plants such as Col de Dame.
I'm still hopeful before Christmas. LOL

frank,

pictures get hijacked. and used for profit on ebay for unknown figs.

Pete yours will come around as i can tell by the girth its young and as it adjusts its crop cycle and does fig shuffle they will ripen little earlier with more favorable temps and it may be tops in your yard depending on your personal palate.
Jon said long ago Black Madeira just may be the best fig and i agree for the last several years its been in our yard.
Dont forget to pinch it at the proper time.  ; )

If you have a greenhouse or indoor grow room you can extend the season and give them more time to ripen.

thanks martin. i'm sure it will turn around soon.. as soon as the weather improves next yr!

bob, i'm completely out of room. i need to move one more Black Madeira to 10 gal, both CdDB and CdDN to 10 gal.. about 10 more different figs to 10 gal.. i might have to start narrowing down the figs soon. there has to be some line i can draw. i mean.. it's easier for martin, no light figs.. but i like some light figs :)

maybe i'll just go with figs that give "wow" on first yr figs... but then i would miss out of lot of other good figs like Kathleen's Black and others. and i know figs just improve over the years. it's too darn long to wait 5-7 yr to narrow down what will work and what will not. i'm more or less collecting based on what i read on forum. i trust few members opinions, and so far those have worked out great.

You mentioned about watermarking.I never used to watermark my my photos untill they started appearing on websites of some other people. Now im using a software called Mass Watermark. It can watermark, resize, add exif to multiple images quickly.Take a look here http://www.masswatermark.com/ its not free though costs $30.i would say well worth the price

Pete for Petes sake you mean to tell me that your Black Madeira , CddB, CddN are in small containers ?
Like an aquarium fish put them in bigger tank and watch them grow fast !

Yes they wow in first season even here in our colder than your climate i recall when it first fruited.

Little secret get rid of them darn white figs you will then have the room to put the dark types in bigger pots
and get better yields to fill the belly come picking season .
Stop searching for white types that are truly excellent you find very few excellent ones the rest are just for untrained palate or someone just getting into figs that like to watch things grow.  ROFL.

Mumbling white figs pssst

Pete also look-up Fastone Picture Resizer .
Its totally free for watermarking and resizing i just use it to watermark and a microsoft proggie to resize which is self executable and basically 1 right click on picture small medium or large that takes about 2 seconds to change size.

Still mumbling white figs psst .

Come to the dark side .

I finally have my proof that it's not the rain that make a fig split. I now believe that It's the swing in temperature between day and night etc...
Here's a shot of a Black Madeira fig that turned into packman overnight with absence of rain for the past week.
I guess it's getting too late to get these figs to ripen now.
