Ok so those two pesky cuttings have finally started to root thank god. I tiped over the cups to see if there was any roots and yup it has tiny little roots about half inch long so now I got 7 out of 7 with roots.

the one in the green container is the white variety the first one too root as you can see the leaf damage due to it touching the plastic dome cup.

Plastic Burned Leaves

Well no real updates on the cuttings from Madeira and I didn't want to start a new thread so here is one of my Hollier Cuttings the Hollier Cuttings are in the lead at the moment.

I noticed that some of these cuttings are in clear plastic by themselves, and others seem to have the sides of the cups covered. Could someone please tell me why the difference. Is it personal preference or does covering the sides let the roots develop in the dark? Is one way better than the other? Please explain. Thanks

Bozoshoes the ones that I have covered are because they have roots and I wanted them to get some morning sun through my office windows if they were not covered the sunlight would surely kill the roots. The last Picture I posted I was experimenting with putting the cup inside a bigger cup to keep the humidity on the bottom part and cooler air above so that I would slow down the top growth worked well on that cutting but could of just been a fluke.

Maggie I sure would be happy if these cuttings would fruit next year right now I have 5 plants in my office and about 20 cuttings gowing so next spring/Summer I will be giving away plants to make some room in here.

Well to make a long story short after reading on a few sites in Portugal about the Bebera Branca and it not looking nothing like my great Grandfathers tree I decided to get in contact with the Ministry of Agriculture in Lisbon Portugal. After 2 weeks I finally got somewhere and as I thought the figs are completely different. They were kind enough to send me a picture of what they call Bebera Branca in Main Land Portugal. It looks Identical to the Bebera Preta only its lighter in Colour its actually pink in colour and not white go figure.

Here is my Great Grandfathers tree see the difference.



As you can see not the same fig the good thing is they believe his tree is a Moscatel Branco fig or better known now a days as the Pingo de Mel. This tree produces light green/yellowish figs never pink.

Also all 5 cuttings have come to a complete stop. 4 of them lost their leaves but have not rotted or dried out yet, only one has leaves at the moment but has not put out any leaves in the last month. Any reason why the leaves would curl inwards and eventually fall off? what would cause this to happen?
This is happening to all the leaves that the cuttings are trying to push out does it need more humidity or something?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

That means the tree I found is also not a Branca as it produces large green figs. The name search continues! :-)

No Sue the cuttings I got are not the same as the fig from Point Loma. Both my Great Grandfathers had fig tree's one has a fig tree like the point loma fig wich is Called simply " Branca " the cuttings I received are from my other Great Grandfather and were supposed to be Bebera Branca wich apparently it is not since its not pink nor same shape. That fig from Point Loma is probably one of the earliest white figs on the island. Also the most common misnamed fig for some reason.

Sue not sure how good your portuguese is but if you read this link it says there are allot of distinct cultivares From Madeira with names of other figs from main land portugal so that just adds to the confusion. The mother plant of my great grandfathers fig is planted next to a Barn and they used to place the cow manure for decades next to the fig tree could that change a figs appearance? My dad said that my great grandfather planted a shoot from this tree on a valley and the figs are smaller and has the same shape as the bebera Branca from Main Land Portugal but its yellow in colour and not pink. Either way this is what they call Bebera Branca in Madeira definately not the same as the Bebera Branca from Main Land Portugal.

Hmm I also managed to delete my account today.

Here is a little update on my great grandfathers fig  the only survivor of the 5 cuttings its been growing quite nicely about 4ft tall now and needs a bigger pot.

Thank you Martin, all I did was add a little Composted Sheep manure on the top I had allot of perlite in the mix and everytime my father watered it it was making a hole deeper and deeper. I did however noticed on all the plants that I added the composted manure they got better growth than the ones I used 10-10-10 slow release.
