Finally, my first home grown fig and I need an ID

earlier this year, i sent an email to gene asking for new trees since the trees he sent me are doing so well. i was told he is no longer in fig business.

Oh? I emailed the contact at eastcoastfigs. Ill see what happens...

i think he will reply. he checks his account on that email address now and then. might take a week or two :)

I'm not sure that 71GTO's is Sal's EL. My Sal's EL came straight from Gene Hosey. I have one in the ground and one in a pot. Neither one has fruit that is ripe, yet??

I know that 71GTO's plant is in New Hersey, in the ground, and I'm in Connecticut. So, we are going to be behind him in getting the same fruit ripe here. But, at least my potted Sal's EL that came directly from Gene Hosey, should have ripe fruits, if they were the same Sal's EL.

So, I'm thinking that either I don't have a true Sal's EL from Gene Hosey, or 71GTO's is not a Sal's EL??

Or, because 71GTO's plant is, I believe he said five years old, produces earlier then my going on two year old potted plant? Nor do the leaves on my Sal's EL look anything like 71GTO's Sal's????

Ut oh, I was just getting used to thinking my tree was a sals el. I did email Gene Hosey. He said that based on the pictures it looks like a sals gene strain el, but with having the leaf and fruit to take out and compare to his tree he can't say 100 percent. He recommended relying on Hermans judgement.

I would say to I went back and looked at as many old topics I could find with pictures of sals el. They did look like what I have, even the leaves that were not fully formed in the pics looked the same.

Here are leaves on my EL.Sals i purchase in 2003.
Its always been in container and fruit size and to a extend coloring can change from year to year depending on weather, pruning, etc.
Click to enlarge , the pictures are dated and go back only 3 years about when i first started taken pictures of my plants to present season.

Martin, your picture of the leaves of your Sal's EL, looks exactly like the leaves on my Sal's EL. The lobes on the right and left of each leaf are a lot closer to the center lope.

But, on 71GTO's leaf the right and left lobes are farther away from the center lobe.

I don't have Herman's expertise on being able to identify different cultivars. So, maybe his right. But, to my eye, that's what appears to make 71GTO's fig different from my Sal's EL, and of course because his in ground fig has ripened way ahead of my potted Sal's EL.???????????????

I agree Bob, I think 71GTO's looks identical to this unknown that i found in Wilmington DE. Not that it helps with his identification any. This fig did hardly any splitting during Irene, just a little around some of the eyes with no spoilage.

I also said the fig is similar to Sal(Gene strain),I did not say it is identical, because only DNA test can tell for sure if it is the same fig.

I will take some more pictures. Some leaves look like ones posted. The leaves that grew later I'm the summer on new growth is where that leaf I posted came from. Brent the figs on this Did not really split either a liitle around the eye first, then maybe a little bit im other places if you leave it on longer

Ok, I took some pictures of older leaves that budded in the spring when the tree came out of dormancy and leaves that are on newer growth that started growing later into July and August, which I understand are the truer leaf shapes. It does seem very similar to Sals Gene strain. It did have a very large crop that I thinned out and seems to be very cold hardy and seems to be diong pretty good with all this rain. I am still pulling ripening figs off the tree. I don't plan on paying for DNA testing though. I guess then my next question is at what point can I name this fig after myself?
