Finally Some Growth !!

I've finally gotten a bit of new growth on a couple of my "dormant" trees. There are still about 3-4 trees that are alive , just no greening up as yet. Weather's been up and down in temps , so I still have high hopes.

Marseilles Blk VS just sprouted a tiny leaf !

Sad looking I know:

But here it is :

Malone ( phew- I was really nervous )

Just a tiny spot , but I'll take it !

Now if the others will cooperate I'll be a happy girl !

Wow!  You're in zone 7a (or 9b), the trees are containerized, and they're just waking up now?  I can understand why you would be worried!  It also gives me hopes for the two new trees I bought over the winter that still haven't woken up yet and are presumed dead...
Jim

I would definitely hold on to them Jim. I don't expect figs from any of those still dormant or just breaking out , but I'm thrilled that those two have shown a bit o green !

I wondered if taking off any figs, if they do grow, would be wise and strengthen those trees?

Good luck with them!  Sun and fertilizer are your best friends.  I'd give them lots of fertilizer in hopes they'll be ready to produce next year.  Who knows, you might even get lucky this year  :)

Thanks Bob . I have been fertilizing them weekly. I'm not giving up on any of them !

I read somewhere that one of the most important times for fertilizing figs is right before and at bud break. They said that is when there is lots of activity as the roots "wake-up" and a heavy dose of MC or other fast acting fert has a out of proportion effect.

Glad to hear this Pattee. I am still hoping against all odds that some of my "dormant" trees spring to life. It was a mighty cold winter up here in upstate NY zone 5B. If not I will have lost some great trees.

Hi Pattee,
What is the paper on the left stem ? I would push it away for that stem to have more sun .
Good luck with your trees !

Gene thanks,  I've been fertilizing all my trees as soon as I saw some bud break on a few of the trees. So they have had a good few+ weeks of it now . Still a few have not responded with growth . The main trunks are alive though. I guess when the weather starts heating up for more than a couple days at a time , they'll respond - I hope .

Johnnie thanks, I'm hoping your trees will respond also. How many are not greening up?  Keep us updated on them .

JD thanks, that is a metal tree marker.  They all get full day sun and I will make sure that the metal tags are out of the way .

It's the end of spring and the beginning of summer.  Surely you will see a lot more green!
