First Air Layer of 2014

This is Malone which I am making an air layer for a good forum member friend. This tree has a perfect side shoot which I will use. Last year I used Rooter Pots but this year I am trying The Air Propagator which you can get here   http://www.airpropagator.com/buy_online.php

The Air Propagator comes as a clam shell in two halves.

I am using a couple of Root Riot Cubes as my rooting medium which I have moistened. You can buy some disc that you soak in water that are made especially for the Air Propagator. I used the RR Cubes last year and they work fine. I also use Q Plugs which I will show in a later post.

I scored the bark and applied Clonex. I then placed the two halves of the clam shell with the RR Cube medium inside around the area I wish the roots to form. I used two rubber bands to secure the two half shells.

I then staked the plant but it wasn't necessary to stake the shoot that is being air layered since it is resting against the container.

I will post additional info and pics later.

i need to take couple.. waiting for the weather to calm down a bit.

yes,

please keep us posted on how this does
Thanks

Mike,
You manage to find the coolest stuff. I'm still using the giant cubes with a deli container. Please post the progress.

I hope it works.  I'm so "if it aint broke, don't fix it" type.  I just make a score on the bark, tie a bag around the limb, fill with damp potting soil, seal the top, wrap in foil, and leave it alone.  Always works.  Never had one fail, and it's cheap!

Suzi

Suzi, I am like that also in many ways but not with
my figs. Always looking for a better way to do things.

Mike, you live in a climate that demands better ways.  If I lived in a cold climate, I would do things like you.

Suz

Mike thanks for this.  I am trying my first air layer as soon as we get a little warmer up here, good luck.

You've inspired me.  I've been holding off on an air layer from my VdB.  Going to do it in the morning.
