Look great John!  I started one on my Sweet George the beginning of last month in a one gallon nursery pot.  I will look to pull it toward the end of next month.

Thanks...good luck with yours.....

Deer, what kind of plastic wrap is that?

They are vacuum pack foodsaver bags ...

I owe a few some air layers, but I'm waiting for the Breba to ripen.  Hate to lose my figs.  Maybe late summah?

Suzi

Thanks, deer. I know there's a product that specialize in air propagation but, if I could save money why not. I use coca coir and perlite for my cuttings, it's great.i get roots in a week. Thanks again, Jeremy. Zone 6B Philadelphia .

Yep ...i know what you mean....I like to start them early.....

Your welcome

Outstanding, John!  Good luck with all your trees this year.

Thanks Frank.......hope we all have a great growing season

Hi,
Nice roots.
Yesterday I pulled out 4 suckers on my big ufti ... They had roots ! They basically are all green growth with roots at the buried part.
I put them in an empty pot to put in a pot with dirt ... but forgot about them ...
We have been having 40°C for 3 days ... I have little hope that they still are alive ... But ok , in case I'll transplant them in a pot ... I had to water 30liters/8 gallons of water per tree. I had some that had wilted ...
I wish I had some more space ...

Thanks Jdsfrance, figs are tough maybe they come back for you......lol

Is there a reason why coco coir would work better than say potting mix?

Nice looking tree there, I love the idea of that type of plastic wrap, way to go!

Very nice and so many vigorous roots in such a short time. This year I started cuttings for the first time. Maybe next year I'll work up to air layers.

They both work.....but I found that with coco coir you get thicker , faster and better rooting.........

I think an air layer is a lot easier and you have a ready made tree.....

There is a fig tree in a school that survives the winters here in NYC... I am thinking of attempting these air layers... Is there a "location" taht would work the best? A stem of a certain size  etc. etc? Thanks! Once you pack wet coco coir/potting mix and tie a piece of plastic around it, you can't ever "water" the medium afterwards, correct? And I'm guess there is no need?

The caliper of the branch depends on the size of the air layer you want to do......you can go as big or small as you want.....the bigger the air layer the bigger the tree you'll get from it....you can use different size bottles to do a bigger one,you cut down the side ....cut an opening in the bottom and set it up like a clam shell ,fill it with coco coir and wrap it around the branch you want to air layer...once you set it up there is no need to water it.....you wrap the whole thing in aluminum foil and your done until roots start to show....Here is a bigger one that I did last year.
