First fig of 2014 Brown Turkey Not

Good day, here is the first fig of the year for me. It was not ripe but the darn #%_>]#] birds beat me to it! I moved this tree to my front yard, right in front of my garage and that darn mocking bird got to it! This fig was labeled Brown Turkey. However, it is not a brown turkey. I got it from Wolf Trap Nursery. This tree is a keeper. I tasted the fig and in another 4 days, it would have been perfect. Anyway, the war is on with the birds! Birds 1 Dennis 0. My Desert King figs are about to ripen.....time to cover the trees!!!!

Enjoy

Looks like someone used your fig for target practice!

Birds: I use rubber snakes....LOL   Now Serious: We don't have that many birds in this area, my mom said they probably migrated to somewhere cooler.
Have a Question: I have been seeing people that are having maturing figs before me. Is it that trees are all on different clocks...???   Is it because my trees don't get full sun all day...????    Or is it because my tree is 2 and 3 feet tall...????

Bird feeder and a pellet gun.
Works on squirrels too!

That is a good question. Your climate if hotter than mine and my first breba ripened a long time ago, the main crop will be ready quite soon.

Dennis,
Could you post a leaf?
Petite Negri breba?

Hello Dennis...

Did you forget the old, Soupy Sales joke?   ...."What can birds do that a man can't do"?  (Punchline, omitted)   Pecker-proof those figs.   : ))

Dennis-  You told us what the figs aren't i.e.  (Brown Turkey)....but, what are they?  Did you lose the label?

Frank

Leaf pictures? Here you go! I don't think it's Petite Negra. The fruit does though.

Armando, I have too many trees to place rubber snakes in. Plus I have snakes in my area! I usually don't see ripe figs till late June and July. This one tree was a surprise. But it has been so hot here with 82+ degrees every day for about a month. We are just now starting to get daily rain showers but its still hot, humid, and muggy. Our current weather reminds me of the summer of 2010. It was one of our best summers for figs! It was very hot then and I am hoping for the same for 2014.

These 4 Brown Turkey Not fig trees are in full sun till about 3:30PM. The trees are on the west. My neighbors high trees block the wind and sun. Two of these trees are 5 feet tall. The other 2 are about two feet tall but all 4 have a massive root system. All 4 were in 1 gallon pots when I got them. I upsize the pots to 5 gallon and started giving them some liquid root hormone.

Whatever it is, it looks delicious!

Great pics, thx for sharing.

English Brown Turkey maybe??

Hi snaglplus,
By the leaf she could be BT, but not by the figs. Especially the brebas are really different and special on my BT - They look like in the famous photos of "BayernFeig Violetta" .
Your fig, looks like you tried to shoot the bird and hit the fig ... Try, and hit the bird next time :)

jds, I wasn't trying to shoot the bird.  I do have a nice pellet gun.  I'm a pretty good shot 70 feet away.  I've dropped several birds to the ground at that distance.  Mostly Robins and Mocking birds.  Those Brown Thrashers are hard to sneak up on.  When they hear my door opening, they take off.  Sometimes, I just sit out with my pellet rifle and wait.  I need to get me a duck blind!

I've got a mocking bird that think my tree is his... he even started in on the green figs.... I couldn't kill them in TX but here they are fair game!!
