For me, in the Seattle area, it's Italian Honey. It's ugly as sin. I think a bird pecked it when it wasn't quite ready and bruised it a bit. I shared it with the puppy. His first fig. He approved. Next up will be Madeleine Des Deux Saisons
You're right Nichole, it's ugly. The Madeline sure is pretty, though. Hope it's great.
Poor fig. Ugly is too harsh of a word. Abused would be a better description.
Nice! Sharing it with the puppy might be a mistake, now it knows those are to eat. Trouble, just sayin.
I share nearly everything I grow with the pups. I don't mind.
My co-worker surprised me today by bringing me one of her ripe figs. She can't remember what the name of it is, but the fruit (a breba) is dark and it is sweet. I asked her for some cuttings this winter. I liked it better than yesterday's Italian Honey fig!
Keep your head up! You live in a place that figs don't naturally grow, and there are a few. But you could beat our socks off on other fruits that grow in your state. I was astounded I could grow an apple here. Actually I would never have tried, but this old tree was here.......... Anna apple. It likes heat. You need figs that like cold. Trade off. But I will put my Anna up against any apple you can grow in Washington! Dammn good apple!Suzi
Oh yeah, this climate does apples, plums, cherries, a ton of berries, cool crop veggies, etc extremely well. I've never had a main crop fig before and I don't think I want to because then I'll know what I'm missing :)
What other fruits and veggies do your dogs like Nichole?
Oh goodness, I'm not sure there is a fruit or veggie they'll turn their nose at, except maybe raw onion. When prepping salads and greens in the kitchen we often feed the scraps to the pups which negates the need for a compost pile. The other day I made a kale salad and gave them the hard center stalks. When I had watermelon yesterday I gave them the green rind. The other day Violet was showing the puppy how to maneuver the big thorns in the gooseberry bushes to get to the sweet/tart berries within. Stinkers. They even eat fresh brussels sprouts
Very cute, those dogs have it made! Cantaloupe seems to be really popular with the pooches and also corn on the cob. I still have not met a dog that likes lettuce though.
Mine like lettuce with a little dressing on it ;)
Yeah that don't count ; )
I have mixed emotions watching a dog tear up fruit or vegetable gardens. I guess its cute if you let them do it. My mother in laws dog eats every plant in her yard at least twice. Nothing is safe! Had to fence off a portion of her yard for fruits. The gate was left open for one night by my kids and countless numbers of rooted fig cuttings got ate. Some with no trace other than an empty pot, which were chewed beyond recognition. I guess cute is in the eye of the beholder.
In my Seattle garden I had no way to separate the pups from the edibles so they ate everything. Nowadays we have 4 acres. Some edibles are accessible to the pups, but the new vegetable garden (not created yet) will be fenced off from the wild omnivores. Also getting a large hoop house. With doors that will be closed :)We have a young orchard in the making. The pups will clean up anything that drops. They'll be so happy!
Nichole, How cute are your puppies! I have a dog who loves fruit, if I'm eating it he will find me and hound me until he gets some!
