Malta Black

This is a first year plant so I'm not expecting a whole lot here but it will be interesting to taste! Thanks Wills for this little jewel! Will post another picture once I pick it. Still a couple days away.

Thanks for sharing I have only had one fig so far this season.  An Adriatic.

That's a pretty fig, Rob. I hope the taste is as nice!

Congrats on your 1st fig. Looks good.

Congratulations. Let us know on the taste. Been enjoying Celeste over here.

Good looking fig Rob:)

Nice, congrats.  Please post pics of the ripe fig after you pick it.

I have a baby Malta from uncle Wills that I planted in Feb.  It has some figlets that will hopefully ripen in a few months.  I can't wait to try it.

Uncle Wills, that's got a nice ring to it;)

Better protect it from critters   :)

congrats!
That first one is special!

Thanks everyone! I did notice some ants on it this morning and mocking birds are notorious around here. I need some organza bags in a bad way.

Picked it today. It was a very small fig, a little bigger than a quarter. I didn't really get to taste much of it as I had to split it with all 3 of boys so we all got 1/4. The little sample I had was very tasty though! The first two things I said were melon berry! All boys agreed;) I haven't had the opportunity to try a lot of figs but so far this was the best one I've had!

We often admire those huge figs that cover the palm of your hand, but sometimes it is those smaller figs that carry the big taste. Should only getter better from here on out.
Congrats.

Thanks Rafed and I agree. Big flavor in this little fig! I only let it ripen one fig as it was just a cutting this past spring but it was the strongest grower this season, 3ft tall now and starting to branch at the top, so I rewarded it. It was begging to ripen just one;) I don't know if this variety will produce little figs or this was just a runt fruit? Can some one answer that question for me? Not that it matters, just curious. It's already got a primo spot reserved in my new yard this fall.

Here is what Jon's varietal info says

"MALTA BLACK
DESCRIPTION
Medium, black dark-red pulp. Sweet. Two crops. DiPaola [of Belleclare Nursery] says it is a grandparent of Celeste. (006d) Belleclare No. 35 (910)

Suzi

Thanks Suzi, that's what I needed to know.

Congratulations Rob.
Funny how you always have to cut that first fig into many sections :)

If I weren't so fertile, like you;) we wouldn't have this problem!
