First Figs

As mentioned in another thread, I was able to put my figs out last week and it was my first overwintering of figs. Many of them (those overwintered in the garage and those that stayed outside) have both leaves and figs starting to bud and grow. Last year, I knocked off the immature figs. This year (year 2) I let them grow, right? I ask because it is (or it seems) early for them to be growing.

JD

I would let them grow and consider thinning if you notice that the plant growth appears to be stunted or held back.

Hello JD!  LIke you, many of my trees have leafed out.  A couple of my trees have have lots of little figs already on the tree!  Some a little smaller than my thumb.  This did not happen last year.  I'm going to leave mine on the tree.  Jon, Bass, Maggie, Jason, Herman, Tim, Ceceil what do you guys think?

I leave mine on. I've got lots of brebas this year also---gotta do some research about which ones to keep. Brebas are new to me as the only trees I had in prior years were mostly Celeste. I've even got a few on the Celestes this year. It'll be interesting to see what they do. I'm glad you guy's trees are doing well.

Dennis,

If my plants are small (like only 2') I will remove all but a couple, if the plant is like 5'
I will leave a 1/2 dozen on.

Others may think differently.

Fatnsassytexan got the right solution:
JD:Those are Breba,so you must reaserch and after that keep only the Breba that is known to persist, and are of superior qualty.
From top of my head:Desert King,Marseilles vs black, possibly Atreano, and English Brown Turkey do have quality breba, that will persist till fully ripe.
You have to take into account if your Sommer season is long and hot, because if it is not, your main crop will not ripe on those cultivars you left all breba on.
Except very south US,and Central Valley Ca.,any other place in this country have Sommers, able to ripe only one crop,of fig fully.
So it is up to you to decide.

Thanks Herman and Tim.  My Arteano is very thick little 3 foot tall tree, meaning the base of my tree is 5 inches thick.  I need to plant it in the ground but we still have 32 and 34 degree weather at night.  The tree is inside my garage now and the daily window sunlight has it growing strong.  Is it a crap shoot to plant it now or should I wait till the nights are constantly above 40?  I'll take some pics tomorrow and post them.  There are a lot of brebas on my tree.  I guess I need to cull some.

Dennis:If you plant the fig outside now,the breba fruits and leaves can get frozen and die,so yes,at this point you have to wait a little longer.
Best procedure would be if you had a covered open patio, like I do,and place the plants next to house wall, under the patio cover.
Then it will accomodate much better to the outside and do not get damaged by frost.
An open patio cover is a good investement when growing figs in pot.
Another sure way to win for you would be to go ahead and plant the tree outside, and install a makeshift tent ,in top of it,using a clear plastic bag,and open a little bit at the bottom.
