First Figs! Too Bad!

I have my first figs growing.

Unfortunately, these are on cuttings, not trees.  I'll have to pinch them off.

I'm using the Root Riot cubes inside standard trays and inserts with the 7" humidity dome.  The tray holds 12 six packs (or 72 cuttings).  I'm finding that the cubes dry out more quickly than I expected given people's comments.  Are you guys leaving standing water at the bottom of the tray for the cubes to continually suck up (which would seem to imply the cubes would be constantly saturated)?  Several of my cubes have gone virtually dry on my - I am using a heating mat.

Humidity is good; the cuttings which have growth seem happy.  No roots popping out of cubes yet, but I'm not discouraged.

A Patrick's Super Giant (supplied by a member) is the most impressive cutting - lots of growth popping out all over.  I have no idea what it might taste like, but if it continues on it's current pace I think there might be a Giant living at the treetop quite soon.

The figs with, well, figs, are Verdal Longue and UCR 66-31.

Now I must commit figicide.  Well, maybe tomorrow.

Andrew, I have not had any problems with mine drying out. I don't have to add hardly any moisture and they stay "wet". I do not use a heating mat
because I have found it is not necessary. I do have one.

I would say the heating mat is drying them out.  Maybe space the mat from the tray by an inch or two?

Andrew...the root riot trays work well without heat mats...I have three trays going at this time...you do have to service them once a day, as some of the cuttings absorb more water than others...my routine each evening is to remove the humidity dome and mist the entire tray with a spray bottle...then observe which cubes look a little dry(lighter color means needs water)...to do this I use a turkey baster to get right in there without damaging other cubes and cuttings...the residual water from the spraying and the baster is the only water that winds up in the bottom tray...and when it looks like its getting a little too full, then I remove the top tray and empty the bottom tray, and were all set.  To do all three trays takes no longer than 1/2hr.(that's 30min. to service 150 plants)...I start at about 6:30pm and by 7:pm I'm watching "Jeopardy".      :)

Andrew, I have found for the most part that fig cuttings like the same air temp we do.  I would not like to wear an electric blanket all the time.  Save electricity and get rid of the heat pad.  Is your dome vented?  About the baby figs, rub them all off, as Gorgi says, they are energy zappers. .  A high humidity without overcrowding does better for me.  I have no experience with the root riot cubes, but a tray holding 72 cubes sounds extremely overcrowded to me.  I like a Sterlite translucent containers about 16" tall, looks like a laundry storage container with a lid  available at WaMart and other stores, will give you more room an still keep high humidity.  Raise and lower the lid a few times daily to keep some air movement.  Early on starting cuttings beginning, I would say more die from drowning than thirst.  Also filtered light is best, uses less water and keeps leaves from burning.  By your pics, those cuttings are about as tight as wooden matches in a box.
