First Hardy Chicago of the year

I am amazed at the HC, it froze to the ground again last year. But it is already producing its first figs! This is BEFORE some of the figs that I kept in a shed last winter. It is an amazing fig.

Anyway, the first one caught be off guard, so I did not see it until a bird ate half of it and it was covered with ants. Seeing as it was the first HC of the year, I blew off the ants and ate it anyway. It was great. Rich, jammy and berry-tasting. Its hard to beat a dead ripe HC

~ i totally agree with you ,i have about 12 varieties and HC is #1 in my oppinion, now mine is full of figs the tree is 2 years old ,and i finally got it in ground this spring i counted i have over 30 on it i ordered the organzo bags to put on for birds and if you have ants put vasoline a couple inches up and around the base of tree ,i haven't tried a fresh fig yet ,but HC is gonna come through i believe ~

I'm hoping to get one to produce next year. Seems like a great variety from everything that I hear.

Chuck - Do you put the vasoline directly on the trunk or do you have some sort of barrier in between the trunk and the vasoline?

I thought I heard somewhere that directly on the trunk would rot it.
