First layering experience on a RdB

I know it's old hat to many people here, but this was my first air layer on a fig and I'm pleased it turned out well! Many thanks to the generous forum member who sent me the Ronde de Bordeaux earlier this year!

I used a water bottle cuff, ProMix HP moistened with very dilute MG, packing tape, and and a foil wrapper. I scratched the outer bark just a little with a knife. It was on for a long time, around 3 months, and could have come off after 4 weeks but I spent a month traveling and then kept putting it off to harvest the figs. There's still a few green figs on top, but it's meant to be a gift for a friend so it's past due. It's resting in the shade now. 

It was sad to remove the figs, and I'll trim it shorter later. As so many others have said, layering was a lot easier than rooting a cutting, and with a much more robust result. :)

Gary, this is the layer I so proudly pointed out to you when you stopped by for a visit, lol. 

I remembered it, Sarah. I wish my Black Madeira layers looked that good.

I know I'm going to feel like a fool when the answer comes.. but, Sarah.. what is the dilute MG you used?  IE, what is MG.. all that's coming to mind is monosodium glutamate. :)

Ha, I knew it.. definitely "Palm to Forehead".. truly a 'duh'.. I have some in the shed.  Hardly ever use it which might by my redeeming save for that brain f@rt.  Thanks to you and the other kind person who pm'd me for the answer....

Way to go Sarah and lucky friend!

Looks great!  Nice job... I have a bunch in the oven now after having 3 successes earlier this year on practice figs (didn't want to risk my inexperience on a known desirable variety)... I hope this next batch works out as well; I'm using the same technique as you described with the only addition being adding a wee touch of rooting powder to the scratched area before enclosing in the bottle.
