First Main Crop Fig of 2012

Here in Arizona LSU Purple is starting to ripen its main crop figs.  LSU Purple is a vigorous grower in this climate.  It is the only tree in my collection that did not go dormant last winter.

Here is the tree.

Here are some figs that are getting close.

Here is the fig that is ripe today.  This fig was sweet but not that rich or flavorful.  I'm hoping that LSU Purple continues to improve with age like everyone says.

This looks like it's on hardened, grey wood... That would make this breba crop.

How old is it?

Jason,

The wood is grey but it formed earlier this year.  In this climate the trees have been growing strong for months now and a lot of this year's wood is already grey and hard.

Jo-Ann,
I got this tree in October of 2010 from Edible Landscaping.

Wow this is only the 2nd season with you!  It is a very pretty tree - so full and lush.  Have you pruned it much or are you letting it grow naturally?

Hi FrozenJoe in Arizona  ; )
your plant looks healthy , i dont know how you folks deal with that heat let alone plants!

Jo-Ann,

LSU Purple has been one of the most vigorous growers in my yard.  I have not pruned it yet.  This winter will probably be its first pruning.  So far it is growing into a small round tree so I shouldn't have to shape it too much.

Martin,
The heat is pretty intense here... but winters are nice and at least during the summer I have fruit to look forward to.  Fresh figs make 110 degrees seem a little more pleasant.

Yup.  And if you're a couple days late on the harvest...dried figs ain't all that bad either.
