First Time Fig Tree - Florida - in Container!

Hi All-

So I love figs and I love fig trees.  I live in FL and my house is surrounded by many wildlife therefore planting fig tree in ground is not best option....(plus my dogs dig up baby plants).... However I have large screened in covered lanai that has full sun of which I want to plant fig tree in large container.

I see that this approach can work and many people seem to do this in east coast.  However what I would like to hear more on is how to set up drainage properly in the container and if fertilization is more or less or same as guidelines for container fig trees?

I am hoping to plant in a few weeks as I hear mid to late Feb is best for Florida (I am near Tampa)....

Any guidance / thoughts?

not the only way, but one of many.

I am growing many of my figs in the kind of container that Steve has linked to above.
If you can't plant in the ground , I don't think there is a better way to go than one of these sub-irrigated pots , for container growing.
Not the best pictures , but show 3 year old plants in 25 gallon pots with sub-irrigation copied after the Bill's Figs link.

Dmac nowadys folks go to great lengths for the potting mix and care of there plants and nothing wrong with that.
But you can keep it very simple with very good results with a simple bag of miracle grow or any other type of potting mix.
Put potting mix in a container and before you water it tilt back the lip of container with 1 hand to get a feel of its weight without a watering , then water the plant in well then tilt the lip of container with 1 hand again to get a feel of how heavy it is. Each day you can do that and when it feels light you water again .
Most containers have drain holes and you can add some around the sides as low as you can get them.

Certain times of the year it will need more water like in hot weather and less in early spring and late in season so you adjust to the plants needs.

The plant will talk to you as well if it needs water before you know it does if you slack off.
Fertilizer can be as simple as 24.8.16 miracle grow mixed with water according to the box instructions  once every week or every 2 weeks.

It can be as simple as that or more complicated and more expensive if you wish such as amending your mix with bark fines, perlite, worm casing. bat guano, seaweed concoction, blood meal, bone meal and a hundred other products off the shelf, the choices are yours . But simple does work well for starters.
Everyone has the own magical way.  ; )

dmacbean ,
Take a look at Martin's posts in past threads .
He grows beautiful plants , the kind I aspire to have.
He knows what he is talking about , even if he is getting a little old(er).
