First time propagator.

Hi, first time on this forum.

I managed to take some cuttings from my aunties home in Italy, she has several very old trees guessing some are more than 100 years old.
I was over there at the end of April so I took cuttings from two of the trees that she recommended, they are both green figs which they call "cucumbra"my Italian is bad so its probably not spelt like this.
I have managed to root them in moss/and a air tight bag and transferred them to plastic cups (kinda carbon copied the excellent video on YouTube by newenglandgardening, thank you!!)
1 of the cuttings has gone crazy and I have potted it on already seems fine on my windowsill (I live in the UK so no worries of them frying from the sun)
I have had problems rooting the second variety, they where taking from new green shoots and not old wood, as unfortunately my aunt cut the tree down because of the wasps in summer time.
one thing that I am worried about is 3 of my cuttings have no buds on them will they form buds or am I wasting time with them?
also should I cover the side of the plastic cups to stop light getting to the roots?

Thanks for any help,

Hi Luke,
if the cuttings have leaf nodes on, where the leaves were once attatched, they will form buds above those nodes once the roots are developed enough.
Yes it is a good idea to keep the new roots in the dark.

It looks a little tacky, but foil works well for tricking the roots into thinking they are in the dark!  Good luck!

With green cutting, moisture control is important so the top doesn't dry out. I did my first green cutting this year. They are responding very fast. Keep the cuttings in a bin, or cover the top with clear plastic to keep the moisture for the top. Make sure the cutting does not touch the plastic.

Thanks for the great info

luke,

check out my post on following link.

the green cuttings were put into a bin on May 27th. today is June 2nd. they are already putting out the leaves.

of course, that doesn't mean there are roots under the soil.. but my past experience is if the leaves come out, roots are either there already, or they will follow very soon.
