first time tasting Valle Negra

Thanks to a most generous member, I'm able to taste this variety today.  This was the only fig from this tree, as it grew from the roots this year.  I know it wasn't ripened in the optimal settings, but it still turned out to be a very delicious fig.  It reminded me of RdB.  Looking forward to what it brings to the table next year!  Literally.

It looks delicious Frank thanks for posting

Pete

Looks good!
Is it a late ripening fig?

Igor,

I don't think it's a late fig.  I read that it's cold hardy and could be identical to Nero 600m.  Maybe other members will chime in.  Here is a great thread on it.

Frank,

Thanks for the link!
The figs might be very similar but the Nero600m leaves look very different (more finger like).
Do you have a Nero by any chance to compare both figs grown in the same conditions?

I do. They both have finger type leaves. My 600 is very young, so I won't be able to compare fruits until next year.

Oh, I see. So in that link (post #21), is that a VN in the Harvey’s hands? It doesn’t look like having the finger type leaves.

Good luck with your Nero too! You have some very delicious figs to wait for next year!

I took a cutting from this tree and it produced completely different leaves.  If Harvey got this from Gorgi, I would feel confident he has a legit VN.  Here are the varioius leaves from VN.  The 3rd pic shows the VN on the day I received it.  If you look closely, you'll see more leaves of the 2nd pic.

I'll be hopefully be rooting this one later this year, glad to hear you liked it Frank. Why did it die back, was it in the ground? I wonder if it would produce more figs from dieback after it gets more established?

Frank, that fig looks good.

Philip

Frank that looks like a nice fig...congrats

Mike,

I received it the fall with the warning that it was root bound.  I should have up potted it sooner than I did, but it died in the pot you see in the post above.  When I finally bare rooted it and put it in a 5 gallon SIP with fresh potting mix, it came back to life from the roots.  I did take a few cuttings from the tree before it died back.  One succeeded and is now 2 feet tall.  Next year I will keep one in a 5 gal SIP and place the other in ground, or in a buried pot.
