First up-potting

Had to make room in my fig nursery for the new cuttings I bought. (yea I bought more, don't roll your eyes at me) :-)

There were a number of cutting I started in late Nov and early Dec that had vigorous roots in the 24 oz cups so that was reason 2 for up-potting long before I can put the pots outside. I do believe I will heed the advise of the veterans and not start cuttings so early next year. Maybe...

Once all the cuttings took off, I figured I would be in this situation so planned to use my large Jacuzzi tub and an extra bathroom tub to house the pots until I could safely take them outside. Checked and could fit 25 one gallons in the Jacuzzi and 17 in the extra bath. Both rooms have good light and pretty easy to control the humidity in them.

Well of course I changed my mind and decided to pot my keepers in three gallons and use the one gallons for those I will sell, trade or give away. So now I can only fit 8 three gallons and 1 one gallon in the Jacuzzi and 2 three gallon and 10 one gallon in the extra bath.

So what to do, what to do when there are other vigorous rooters that I know I will need to up-pot in February? I thought maybe a kiddie pool or two and take over another room in my house, LOL. I am certainly open to suggestions from others who have been in this situation. February and early March are the worst for cold weather in Kentucky so know I can't use my garage. Don't have a basement.

Not complaining here folks. I am very much enjoying my first fig cutting rooting adventure!

You see once I take mine outside, most if not all will have to stay outside the house. I would be planning what to do for next winter with so many.
Sounds like a heated green house is in the cards.

Hi Sas, I think they will be alright next fall when I put them in the garage. That is where my current trees winter. They have done very well there the past few years.

Don't think that is an option for these new "toddler" figs since it does get to about 30 in the garage when we have bitter February weather.

Ah a greenhouse...I would love a greenhouse. I've been following the Show me your greenhouse thread on the other forum and am impressed with what people have done. I will be looking in to this more and seeing what I can do in my neighborhood which has covenants and restrictions which are, well, very restrictive. I've been thinking maybe a sunroom addition, yea that is the ticket!

I'd say, give them a Jacuzzi bath to stimulate them even more  ;)

LOL! that would help with the humidity huh. But they might become spoiled entitled fig trees.  :-)

Bright indirect light is not enough to keep figs healthy.  I would commandeer a grow room and set up HID or LED lighting if you can afford it.  Do not fertilize.  You want them to grow as slowly as possible until they can go outside.

Thanks Bob, good advice

You could try a couple of these if it really gets out of hand.
You can fit 18 #1's per tray.

Hummmm, I like that idea Paul. Think the boat has sailed on the out of hand thing. LOL  I bought 6 more cuttings today. Just have to stop reading about how great this fig is and that fig is from our helpful forum members.

Appreciate the ideas on how to manage until springtime comes.

I am in the process of developing a special greenhouse that may solve your space problems. Here is a picture of prototype #2 . Uses the most efficient LED from an American company, equivalent to roughly 1000 Watts incandescent with only 160 Watts. we control the temperature, the humidity, root temperature, moisture level, light intensity, spectrum, light on off timing etc. It also has root moisture alarm in case you forget to water (it will either be a text message or message on your app...TBD). We are finalizing the hardware design in 4 weeks and currently refining the firmware and then the user interface which will be about 8 weeks total before we start to ship. The system also filter the air coming in and coming out of the system. Everything is controlled from an app and you can either select what you are growing and hit "go" or you can customize you own settings and save a custom growing setting.

We will be retailing this for somewhere between $1,199 and $1,499 (still TBD) but I was going to offer it to F4F members at a special price ~ $799, if they help us spread the word. It has good aestethics  and most people wont mind having it in the house. Completely light proof and you cannot tell it is on at all. I will offer it in the Light Brown as shown but also in Hunter Green. Everything inside is heavy duty with several redundancies and safety margin on the critical items. If you are interested, let me know and I can keep you posted as we get closer to releasing the product.

Hi @simons,

Sounds like an interesting project. If you meant to put in a link or a picture, it doesn't appear to be in the post. Not sure if this is for me as I have almost convinced myself to add on a sunroom/conservatory (can't call it a greenhouse or it will never get past the homeowners board), cause it would mean I could have more orchids and bonsai too! But it never hurts to look at your option!

Thanks

@simonS  Yes, no pics came through... Would be interested in additional info, pics other specs including dimensions, capacity, etc....
