Maybe I am late to the party, but I found the article referenced: CONDIT, I. J. & FLANDERS, S. E. (1945). 'Gall flowers' of the fig-a misnomer. Science, 102, 128.
Perhaps this is why there is a fig named Flanders. I had previously supposed that it might be related to the Flanders region of Belgium.
