Florea 7-29-14


First one I have had with multiple figs ready this year. Maybe I am fig starved after long fast with the exception of a couple breba, but I sure tasted great, don't ask me for a flavor profile yet I am terrible at that. Think great asset is it's that it's early and everything early season is exciting. My tree is only about 18 inches single trunk but many low full branches. Are other folks Florea that same growth profile very shrubby and compact.

I have a young Florea too (received as an airlayer last Fall).  It is also about 18 inches tall, compact and shrubby with multiple branches.  It seems like the nodal distance is short so you end up with very dense foliage.  It has about 10 figs on it that are way behind yours.  I'm hoping to taste them sometime in August.

Yes, "nodal distance is short so you end up with very dense foliage"  that describes mine as well.

Thanks for sharing pics, Phil! Do you remove some of the leaves on denser trees or just let them do their thing? I have a few really dense foliage trees.

I don't. I actually like the dense look visually, not sure it's impact on fruiting, but I have not found a real vigorous or an unruly branch for an air layer on this one to have my backup it has a nice shape so I have been waiting. That was a big goal this summer on my trees that I only have a single of I wanted a backup prior to planting out next spring. The plan was this spring but last winter gave me cold feet and thinking sizing them up another year. I have my barn going up and will be insulating one room for a safe room for winter. I have pretty much been exiled from the garage.  I do thin out some that put up to many trunks like my Scott's black which has seemingly dozen trunks but none dominant or over a foot. I should have thinned that one already, but will wait until dormant for cuttings.

Just went out to check on mine.  Not compact at all about 3' tall with a couple of other shorter shoots too.  6 plus inches between nodes.  Has several figs none anywhere near ripe though.  

If you need a backup I got you covered.  I have 3 plants.

Thanks for the Offer. Will try to make down your way in a week or so about the duplicates we discussed, will think about the Florea then. I think I have 3 duplicate pomegranates I will tote down as well if you interested.
