Gardening in California, I have always watered leaves of most everything I grow. We have a long, dry season, and I find it very beneficial to occasionally water overhead to wash away dust and discourage spider mites, aphids, etc. I do it in the early evening, so that foliage is dry before any hot sun can burn, and also so that the plant can drink up maximum water overnight. Humidity is normally quite low here, so water related diseases are seldom a problem. During cool or foggy weather, I water at the soil level, to help keep leaves from staying too wet.
