I use a few impact sprinklers here to water with but mostly use the micro spray heads. One area I use a few impacts is for frost/freeze protection on my blueberries and in the grow out areas for the young plants. I have about 200 blueberry plants broken up between 3 beds. Here in Florida the BB start to bloom in early February so we need freeze/frost protection for about a month as we are generally frost free March 1. I use 6 impact sprinklers for freeze protection, 2 per bed...the brass and metal sort and I hate them with a passion. They freeze up they get stuck they water irregularly the hard water here gums them up ect ect. A friend who is a commercial blueberry grower told me about a new impact sprinkler from Rainbird the LF 1200. I ordered a couple to try them and they are AWESOME......not only are they smooth they rotate smoothly even if you drop the water pressure down to almost nothing. The curtain of water they apply as they spin is absolutely even. It is like night and day compared to the metal types. These heads come with a myriad of nozzle and deflector choices and they all snap in no tools needed and due to the design they can't plug. I went with pink deflectors and tan nozzles. On top of everything else they are quite cheap, much cheaper than the brass impact sprinklers. I liked them so much I made a follow up order yesterday to replace all the impact sprinklers.......gotta love new technology.
