For gorgi

Nothing like a topic with your username in it to get your attention huh George ;-) ?

But seriously though. I was just looking at that old thread of yours wherein you solicited suggestions for a good name for your new Maltese Beauty. Great name for her by the way.

But it got me thinking of a suggestion for possible future names for some of those other nice ones you've "discovered" on the island. You've already named one "Falcon". You also had one suggestion for "dragon" that you liked. I"m just going to throw out there the suggestion of using more bird names in the future. It might be an easier way to come up with new names for some of those nicer ones if you had a "theme" to follow.

There would be a lot of other strong names still available such as Eagle, Hawk, Osprey, etc. If you wanted a name that might be more descriptive you could go with something that hinted at the color of the fig such as Raven, Canary, or Cardinal. If you wanted to go mythical you'd still have Dragon, Phoenix, Thunderbird & possibly others. Then there's the Ratite family which includes that giant extinct bird from New Zealand - the Moa. There's also the Kiwi bird (might get a little confusing with that one though :) ). We haven't even gotten into waterfowl yet. You know, something like Black Swan. All of these names could be preceded by "Maltese" of course.

Granted, I may be putting a little too much thought into this. Or maybe I just have too much time on my hands today :-) . But I thought I'd just offer some suggestions. You may not even give this a second thought and that would be fine with me. I certainly wont be offended if you don't even take it into consideration.

Just some fun suggestions for consideration really...................

DISCLAIMER: Hopefully no one, who might be sensitive to the whole naming/re-naming issue, will be offended by the above suggestions ;) .

@saxonfig,
All your hints are well taken and noted...
Thanks Bill.

You're welcome George. Some of the varieties I rec'd from you are in-ground and buried under a nice layer of mulch right now. Hopefully they will take right off this summer. I hope to see some fruit from a couple of them at least :) .

Why not name one Maltese Mockingbird. After all in my neck of the woods they are very fond of figs.

i have a book on mythilogical creaters legends and monsters. written by carol rose with loads of names and legendary beast. i could look up names by from what ever part of the world, by country etc. if intrested pm me some info and i will get a list together with whats what from where and define. just another thought I like the bird thing. the more exoctic names for better figs, more common names for the average figs.

Dave

See what you started Bill.
Ok how about the name GORGI.

I recall back in the day when i first saw that screen name here i thought it was
a woman member until.......

How about Maltese Hummingbird. Click on the pic. It looks like a small white fig.

LOL Martin! I remember awhile back when I had messaged George back and forth a couple of times, I had called him gorgi a time or two because I hadn't learned his name yet. He was pretty quick to clarify that his name was George.

So George, I bet that was a nickname you've had since you were a kid. Am I close? I'm sure I can "one-up" you though. My childhood nickname was "Pudge". Not revealing anything important here. I'd never use that as a password or anything else security related.

I hope you don't take offense to any of this George. As Martin is fond of saying, it's all in fun.....

Glad to see I've stirred something up here :-) .

well if a name gets in gains popularity and is used in circulation isnt that how people come to know things by a name. and F4F i would say has a large reach from member to member and beyond with those selling as well. it may add to a little more confusion, (if thats possible) or it could help bring about a standerd of name for a single item. the damage to the name thing has been done well before any of us ever tasted a fig or before we were born. with out haveing people unit behind it and say "yeah thats what we will call it" then you are still stuck with 500 names for one tree. right or wrong.

I like it George. Good name for a very black-skinned fig.

Here's another "Raven" I hadn't thought of since high school :  http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/15638

I know - completely unrelated - but I just couldn't resist :-) .

I like it. And I have her.

To add a twist...I found a list of bird names with the hopes of finding a cool sounding or significant meaning name to pair with Maltese. And then I find list with the Maltese bird names. So now I am thinking synergy and the relationship to how a fig tree is protruding from cliff, rising from the concrete, or in a remote area unreachable by basic means. So here are a few ideas along with a notional but related description:

Maltese Paletta ==> White Stork ==> White long necked fig
Maltese Sarsella ==> Blue Winged Teal ==> Blue hued fig
Maltese Arpa ==> Golden Eagle ==> Large golden fig
Maltese Nankina ==> Cream Colored Courser ==> Small light fig with amber pulp, needs caprification
Maltese Baruza ==> Red-Necked Phalarope ==> Medium, Dark Fig with Red Neck
Maltese Merrill ==> Blue Rock Thrush ==> The Blue Rock Thrush is the national bird of Malta. Here is a photo of the Merrill:

Found a photo journal as well as a full list in two pages: Page 1 : Red-throated Diver - Common Crane and Page 2 : Demoiselle Crane - European Nightjar.

I think JD is on to something beautiful here George. So beautimus I think I feel a little tear welling up hahaha.

Maybe we're just trying to give back where you've shared so generously George. That's what I'm going with and I'm sticking to it ;-) !

So Art, was that one dark or light inside? Did it taste like berries? (Just kidding. Please don't call PETA.)

I do like the "Merrill" bird! It is a native, elusive, cute blue bird,
nests on cliffs and has a very melodious song (I know - I heard it!).
I do not like the '3-worded' English translation though.
Now, I have to find-me a fig that best-fits this little birdy...

On a much sadder note;
I just dropped my wife and son at the airport to attend
the funeral of my father-in-law (wife's father); Marcel.
He was a kind hearted (and rather well known/famous) man at a ripe age of 90.
Still with a very sharp mind and able to move around; he suddenly
died today.
Pity, he never saw his
~1 month-old first grand-grand-son.
At least he did see a picture of him (Michael) and we know that he was very pleased.
God bless his soul now.

BTW, he used to
(being funny) refer to his garage where I did my 'figgy-things' - as Gorgi's own cave/lab...

George,
Good memories, hugs, smiles, and laughter for you and your family. 90 years? Wow. Yes, God bless his soul as he blessed his life.

Very sorry to hear about your father-in-law George. He sounds like a great guy. Our hearts are with you and your family.

Maybe a fig named in honor of Marcel - ?

Sorry to hear about your father in law.

Naming a fig in honor of Marcel seems like a great idea.

George, sorry to hear of your families loss.  There is never a "good" time, but, at 90 he was certainly blessed to have his mind and body till the end.
