for those who kept notes...

how early or late is this yr as far as taking the container trees outside? i'm looking back at my posts and it seems newly rooted 1 gals were out on 3/22 last yr. i didn't do fig shuffle last yr and after that, i just left them out for the season.

this yr, i started shuffle on 3/8 it seems. that's about 2 weeks earlier than last yr.

i know with less than ideal weather last yr, my trees were about 1.5 months late in putting on the figs.

by 5/31/13, i had fig embryos. so i would imagine i had figs by later aug last yr. this also means i had fig embryo around mid april in 2012. so far i don't see any main crop thinking about coming out.

I will be around 3-4 weeks behind this year it look like, I lost most of my terminal buds so nothing is leafing out, the upside is that I think since they aren't leafing out when they do start I will be around the same place as the temperatures will favour growth more than when they normally leaf out.

providing that weather will not improve in next few yrs.. i would assume that i have gained 2 weeks from fig shuffle. with added heat from the new locations for the trees, i hope to gain couple of more weeks. that still set me back 2 weeks since 2012. rain has been manageable this yr so far. every 3-4 days. if this keeps up, the season should be a good one.

As per schedule in PNW. Now to watch for sudden cold snaps in the night. Plentiful brebas from many trees.

sounds like west coast is not having much of issue with cold weather. it seems to be pegging the east coast for last 2 yrs. hope this goes away soon.

I did a shuffle of sorts myself yesterday.  Greenhouse is getting too hot with our daytime temps regularly hitting 80s so my potted plants were moved into the screenhouse.  Many will get planted into my orchard in about a month.  The ground is still cool so I'm holding off for now.

How 'cool' is too cool to plant in ground, when the day time temps hit 80s?
How cold are your nights this time of year?

alan, are they breba or main? my breba crops are all dropping other than few. those should be ready, if stay on, by some time in june. i'm more concerned about main.

in 2012, Paradiso and VdB were the only tree giving figs. both of them had 3 crops. breba, main and second flush of main. the weather was hot enough everything was growing nice and fast. after 1st main were done, it put on additional growth and gave another flush of main crop.

on the other hand, last yr, main crop took very long time to ripen and the interval between each fig getting ripen was long. but all finished pretty early. i think Niagara Black was one of the last one that i tasted along with 187-25. both were great figs.

Ed, our nighttime lows have been in upper 40s lately.  Ground still feels cool to the touch but I haven't measured soil temperature.  Plants just grow faster when in pots at this time of year.  Even with the drought our soils get wet over the winter and are just now drying out.

We had about 45 nights with frost this winter, more than I remember ever having before.  But winter daytime temps were pleasant.  Still, I have observed many of my young figs having some die back due to freeze damage.  I need to start taking some notes about that.
