Found a fig tree!

So I came here several weeks ago for the first time for help and was gracious to receive more than I needed and for that I am thankful. I will let everyone know how my cuttings go. In the meantime, I travel for a living and spend about a third of my nights in hotels. Here I was at a hotel in MS and there is a small pond out back with this fine gem next to it. I remember people saying that once you start growing figs you will notice fig trees everywhere you go and this is the first time I have actually seen one. Here she is.

Not the biggest thing in the world but I would be lying if I said I wasn't excited anyway. Didn't find any fruit though.

Nice job. Soon you will be driving along looking over fences and along the sides of houses all the time.

It is true. Once you catch the bug, you start finding figs all around. I have lived in my home for about four years now. I go for a lot of long walks through my neighborhood, including cutting through my neighbor's orchards and fields. Only within the last year have I noticed that there are at least twenty wild figs within a ten minute walk growing out of any place that has been left alone. This weekend, I found this one growing out of the street!

Wow that's amazing. Hopefully that means my fig cuttings will grow like weeds!

Paul,

Nice tree, healthy and growing strong
An ideal candidate to be taken home with all its roots,   be potted or grounded and be ready to accept a known scion by next spring ...
and be showing a fig or two a bit later in August or September !

I bet you were like "hey! a fig tree!"  I was there just a few weeks ago, great feeling for sure.  Congrats.

Looks like it froze to the ground last winter.  Most of those shoots look young, and the gray ones don't appear to have leaves as far as I can tell.

I assume there are no fig wasps in Mississippi. So, this tree was planted by somebody, correct?

Yes it was. I asked at the hotel and they said a former employee planted it as well as some other trees. Not sure how or where it came from or how long ago.

Hi chrisw,
Nice find. Did they tell you how the figs were ?
Is it an honey fig ? in the family of kadota ? ... from the leaves shape, could be ...
Taking cuttings in those conditions can be tricky :) .

The guy I asked didn't know what kind and he didn't know if it produced fruit yet. I believe this was its first year in the ground.
