Found another curious nearby fig ("Unknown Morley")

These actually went out yesterday, sorry for the delay.

I intended to ship on last Tuesday, but it was impossible to get out due to snow/ice issues and post offices closed.  A limited number of post offices and local businesses re-opened last Wednesday, but I couldn't reach them due to ice on the hills around the house and throughout our neighborhoods - not even the main roads were cleared much.

By Thursday, a few more businesses and post offices were open, but I wasn't going to drive with all the idiots out (nobody in Atlanta knows how to drive in ice, apparently).  Mail started delivering to a limited area again Friday, but I didn't have postage on my boxes and the carrier was already overloaded with 4 days worth of missed mail ... PS - by the way, what in the hell happened to the 'neither rain nor snow nor hail nor sleet nor ice' motto for the USPS, and why doesn't that mean anything anymore?  Furthermore, why am I paying xtra for postage when I don't get xtra service?!?!

We had a three-day holiday weekend, which had everything closed down again, so I couldn't ship until yesterday.  They're in transit now, and you folks here in GA (3 of you?) should get them today or tomorrow, the rest should get them by Thursday/Friday.  Jon, Sue and others a little farther west may get them on Saturday.

If you don't have cuttings by next Tuesday (1/25), please drop me a PM.

totally understandable, Jason. we truely appreciate your generousity. stay safe.

Jason i got my cuttings today appreciate your generousity...Thank You...Take care Fotula...

Hi Jason,

Wanted to let you know that my package arrived today with the Morley cuttings.
Will let you know how they do in Texas.
Thanks again.
Cathy

Thank you so much for the cuttings! My husband was sure it was more seeds, he didn't know what to say when he saw fig cuttings instead.

My DW stopped asking when she sees me bring a small package home these days ;)

Jason, got my cuttings yesterday and 3 of them are started already. I will save the rest just in case. Thanks again!

Got 'em.
Thanks Jason.

Jason, Santa came today and left me a package. Thanks a million. Like I told you before I owe you one.
"gene"

Gene, you're welcome, you owe me nothing, your thanks are plenty enough for me.

I don't expect anything in return from anyone, all I ever ask is that folks 'pay it forward' to another fig friend.  I've already had that kindness come around my way, so I know something is working right :)

Hey Jason,

Just wanted to let you know that the Unknown Morley cuttings have begun rooting. woohoo!!

Sweet!  Keep this thread updated with pics if you remember!

That great news go4broek, hope mine do the same. I have some white stuff growing on mine but no root yet. What is your rooting method. I have mine in a baggie wrapped with a paper towel. Ain't Jason great for finding it.
"gene"

Don't thank me till we know it's not just another a Celeste ;)

Jason, if it's a Celeste it got the prettiest leaves on it of any Celeste I've ever seen.
"gene"

@ gene,

I tried Vermiculite and spagnum moss started on 21 Jan and 25 Jan, respectively. Noted roots on 3 of the ones in sphagnum moss yesterday and one of the ones in Vermiculite today. Yes, Jason is The Man! lol.

@ Jason,

Now that you mention it, It DOES bear a strong resemblance to Celeste! Some differences though. Even if it is, it's all good!

I know it looks like a couple of supposed "Celeste" trees I've viewed on the internet, but as I think Gene will also tell you about his location, none of the Celeste around Atlanta look anything like these leaves.

I think there is one Celeste in the F4F Varieties section with similar leaves, but I question if it's a Celeste.

I'm hoping it's not!  But we shall see.  I think there are enough people growing them now that we may have pictures of the fruit as soon as October if we get lucky ;)

I'm sending out two more bundles today, just to spread it around really well.  Hoping to see some good results :)

Jason,
Do you want any more volunteers to send your unknown Morley to ?
If so can I volunteer ? And I also like the Pay it forward thing .
I have gotton fig cuttings and sent fig cuttings.
Thank You. Debbie

Jason,

It's weird that your local Celeste trees look so different. Like I said, mine looks very similar. Here are some pics:

@Debbie - Sorry :(  I literally sent out the last two bundles today.  I've pretty much cut the tree to the ground at this point, sending out cuttings to over 20 people.  We also may be moving soon, so ... I'm maybe be leaving this condensed little pocket of figgy abundance in Atlanta.  I will be back though :)

@Ruben - Looking at this page of Celeste:  http://figs4fun.com/Thumbnail_Celeste.html

Almost all of the Celeste around here look like:
"5-04" Accession
"4-19 AA001" Accession
"Miscellaneous Accessions"

And also Ray Givan's:  http://members.cox.net/figs4fun/pix/fp006-20.jpg

I also having pictures of the fruit and other trees here:

This is fruit from my nearest Celeste:

This is a huge Blue Celeste around the corner, can't see a lot of the leaves but they're similar w/big round 5-lobes:

Two more around the corner from my office:

Here's the fruit from those 2 trees:

I realize those pics are terrible and you can't see a lot of the leaves, but they're mostly 5-lobe with spoon-shaped leaves.

Jason, That's o k , I just try to look out for new cuttings.
Happy figgin to you... Thanks Anyway.

Jason,

Here are pictures of the main crop fruit. It had dropped many of the fruit up to this point (from mid-August to early October) even though all the growth you saw in the previous pictures was new due to a winter-kill the previous winter (2009/2010). It seems to be faring much better this winter (still unprotected) despite colder temps this year.

Jason,
Morley now lives in Texas.

Going to put this out there....if anyone has a Morley or Blue Celeste, I would be most appreciative.  PM or email me, willing to purchase if necessary.  Thanks in advance!!

**Edit:  I was able to locate a Morley--it has some of the most interesting leaves on a plant I have seen to date.

Sara,
Don't just "put it out there"...I think you should ask Jason (satellitehead) directly instead of asking "if anyone". Jason is a good guy, generous, and has fig experience and knowledge to share.
