Found another curious nearby fig ("Unknown Morley")

I usually do my "free cuttings run" between December and January when everything is dormant.  Keep your eyes peeled for another post like this a few months from now.  I have about 20 trees I've found within a half mile of my house to choose from, some are named and confirmed (Celeste, Black Mission, to name a couple).

After I took several dozen cuttings of Morley and sent out to a couple dozen folks here, there wasn't much left of the tree but thick stumps.  I noticed the other day that someone came behind me about 2 weeks later (landscape company?) and shredded what was left of the tree's above-ground growth.

Because of how it suckers, I expect it will come back with tons of sucker growth this year, so if we are still in the neighborhood, I'll be taking more cuttings down the road.  I'm probably going to discretely pop by and airlayer a few of the shoots 3-4 weeks from now also ;)

Sara,

Check your PMs. I can give you one of my rooted cuttings.

Thank you Ruben....I will treasure it dearly! (sent you a PM back).

@JD...I have been talking to Jason, in love with Voiture #217 but his plant(s) are too young for any propogation and the master plant is long bulldozed.  He pointed me to the Morley thread because I love the look of the leaf on the Voiture #217.  I chose to "put it out there" because I knew that he had sent a lot of Morley cuttings out, and was hoping that there was one that someone would part with. If not, I was just going to wait until Jason raided the tree again.
I am sure Jason gets bombarded as it is asking for cuttings, so I opted to post to the forum.  I would love to go on a fig walk with some of you!!  When I talk figs here, people get a glazed eye look.  And this is to people that I know who grow things, so I do a little education and promote F4F.  BTW JD, I like the pics you post of your plants---really nice, healthy looking!

Everyone here on F4F is so very helpful, and I cannot stress that enough.  Figs are a new adventure for me, and I am hooked (line and sinker, too). I suspect there are many other forum members who felt as I do right now.  To everyone on the forum, and Jon for starting it....thank you!   One day I will be able to share my cuttings/plants with beginners, and not-so-beginners..hopefully!

Wanted to post an update of my Unknown Morley cuttings to-date. It looks like it will be producing main crop figs this season. Anyone else seeing theirs making fruit?

I have one in a one gallon pot that's looking very nice but it doesn't have any figs on it. I think I have another one but couldn't find it just now. I was hoping to get at least one fig to be able to see what it is but looks like I'll have to depend on you go4broke. I still say it has some great looking leaves.

Gene,

We still have a lot of growing time left in our zones. I was just curious because Jason had been told that the parent tree produced fruit sporadically.

Ruben, yes we do have a lot of time left, so maybe it will grow a fig. I sure wish it would. I keep y'all posted.

Thanks for keeping this thread updated, y'all, I appreciate it. The house recently sold and the new owner moved the rear door of the house and installed a french door.  It looked like they were building a deck, but they were actually re-siding the house; can't see if they cut it our of the ground prior. Tree may not exist anymore, so what any of you have may be the last of it.....

@ Sara. I have you on my list. I will check on the Voiture #217 growing outside and see if Jason sent me any extra Morley. I have two small ones growing in one-gallon pots but nothing like what Gene & Ruben are posting.

@ Gene & Ruben. What are you feeding those figs?

JD,

Those plants have been growing in different media since they were up-potted from 12-oz cups.
The one on the left started out in MG with supplemental Perlite until 28 Apr when I added almost another 1/2 pot of the mix I used for plants 3 and 4. Un fortunately, it's growth was retarded by my using Petroleum jelly on my first 3 rooted cuttings in an attempt to prevent mold. All 3 rooted but 2 of them failed to open an buds do to the chemical injury. Silly Me!
The next one is in Joe Morle's mix but only using 4 tbsp Osmocote Indoor/Outdoor in 9-gal of mix instead of all the fertilizers he does.
The 3rd and 4th are also in Morle's mix with the same amount of Osmocote but this time two parts peat moss. No lime or other fertilizers have been used in the making of these plants ;-)). I am experimenting with different soiless media and blends in order to determine what works best all around. Hope this helped.

Thanks Ruben.

I am exploring changes to my potting media as well.

Mr. Morley looks like he may not be very happy, looks like the heat is drooping those leaves.  Leaves look gorgeous still, though!

Hi Jason,

Mr. Morley loves Texas.  I have one that is getting close to 4' tall now.

Of course, everything is bigger in Texas ;)

Hey Ruben, now that you have some mature-ish leaves on Morley, how do you feel it compares to your Celeste?  I am curious because it doesn't seem like Morley has a breba crop.  Maybe this is just another Celeste, but most of the Celeste around here have round-lobed leaves, usually three lobes and/or five lobes.

The figs and the hair! ;-)

Noted, bit it is also a familiar point for comparison, which is how I am using it.

People ... or birds ... or other animals ... you never know!

Jason,

It's too early to tell. Interestingly, my celeste, which last year had almost exclusively 5-lobed leaves like the one I posted here, is now sporting mostly 3-lobed leaves. I think they will change back later in the season. Might be due to the fact that this year the leaves are growing on old wood too.

Jason,
Just a note, I have 7, yes, 7 Unk Morley trees rooted in 1 gal pots. Don't think I've ever been so successful with any variety before. Love the leaves!
Thanks! Sue

You're welcome, Sue  =)

I shipped to well over a dozen people who have given similar feedback - Morley is a superb rooter, very few failed, and grows like a monster.   Many (like you) had even better luck than I did ;)  I only saved 4 cuttings for myself and sent out upwards of ten cuttings to some folks.  I think I wound up with two strikes that survived of my four using Jon's new baggie method.

With the leaves looking as beautiful as they do, I'm so curious to see the fruit.  Watch - with how much I hate on squirrels here, the word is going to get out, and squirrels nationwide are going to eat all of the fruit on everyone's trees before it ripens ;)

Unknown Morley is one of few cuttings that survived my mold and neglect issues. Thank you Jason for sharing this tree.

You are very welcome!

I got in a conversation with the new neighbor that moved in to the house from Colombia.  Apparently, the tree is still alive, but was cut down to the roots when they were about to install the deck.  The neighbor opted not to install the deck where it was and instead put in a french door a few feet away from the previous exterior door...  So Morley is still alive and well (for now)

Ruben,
How are the fruits on your Unk Morley coming along? I think you are the only one close to having ripe fruit? Can you post pics?
Sue
