Found another curious nearby fig ("Unknown Morley")

Hi, Sue

Here is one from yesterday. Two of the four cuttings plants I have started producing fruit but one of them dropped them. I still think they are a Celeste. They have the long, thin stem and protruding ostiole like Celeste does when immature. We'll know soon enough. Probably by the end of this month since these started forming 28 May.

Hi Jason, Morley is a robust dual branched plant, about 20 inches high, 12 chick pea size figlets with beautiful leaves, thanks again, Sergio in NJ.

Alright, it's official, the Morley parent tree is a goner.  The new owner dug it up and re-landscaped their backyard.  So, this makes two potentially awesome trees gone (Morley and Voiture).

I'm incredibly happy I found this forum and was able to send cuttings of both trees to at least three dozen people.  From one fig tree, many.  I hope it turns out to be a winner.  I've got breba figs on my couple of trees already.  Keeping my fingers crossed!

The jury is in final stages of deliberation with only one holdout...

Very similar fruit shape to some Celeste, and the stem resembles other people's variants of Celeste I've seen (and some here); however, the eye isn't quite pink, which is a very common trait of 'typical Celeste' types in my area.

Looking pretty awesome, I'm glad you've gotten something.  I haven't seen much out of my potted versions yet.  Thanks, Ruben!

I would add that it looks very similar to this fig, which some claimed was a Celeste, but I wasn't quite buying it:

This is what Celeste in my area typically looks like, note that the 'typical' Celeste in GA has more teardrop shaped fruit with an almost non-existent stem:

I will say, the leaves on Morley are probably the coolest leaves I've ever seen out of a Celeste if it truly ends up being just that.

Well...here's the first ripe one...Tasted just like his cousins from other Celeste variants I have. Good, but not my best Celeste. It's still young though.

Looks beautiful.  Nice red interior.  Do most of your Celeste have red interior?

Yes. Dark red. Here's one that I got from Willis Orchards. It was purchased as  White Kadota. This fig has gone through remarkable changes since 2010. I would not believe it if it wasn't that I have chronicled them. Fortunately, it has turned out to be an excellent fig.  Larger, sweeter, juicier and more flavorful than the others. I believe the color is so light due to the fact that the growth is so dense that the fruit does not see any light.

Man, they're almost all a dark pinkish flesh here at best. It's rare to find something that dark red and without a pink eye. Environmental, maybe?

Curious if Morley gets dusted cracked skin if left on. Did you experience any fruit drop out of this since starting?

That Willis fig looks like a smaller Royal Vineyard.

Jason,

It did have some checking and a light bloom. I will get better pics of the next one. Here are pics of the Willis fig in the past...

Fruit definitely smacks of Celeste. Thanks again for giving this one a go. Curious to see if it tends to fruit drop like other Celeste, double-crops, or improves with age/size.

I'll be keeping Morley for sure, along with two (or three?) unknowns JD supplied which have a high likelihood of being Celeste also, trial them all out and see how they do.

I think Morley has some of the most interesting leaves I've seen for a Celeste variant. The leaves almost hint of a Mt Etna origin, but the fruit definitely looks Celeste-y.

Better pics...

Case closed.  I think you're right - I think it is a Celeste variety with really awesome leaves and without excessive fruit drop.  I hope the taste picks up in following years.

I take it those two tasted about the same?

Indeed. The taste is good right now, but a bit larger size would make it even better.

I almost found this one too late. It was difficult to see and that is likely what saved it from the birds. Nevertheless, it is good. the color is somewhat different than other Celestes but it is young and it was good. It will need to be very good to compete with the other Celestes but it has a slight advantage, those seeds introduced a texture that other Celestes do not have.

Thanks Jason

Not too old of an old fart Martin (in my 40s). My children are desperately trying to beat me playing jacks.
