Found Another One!

Found these planted inside a hoop house in central NJ today. The owner called these "Prosciutto Figs". He said they were large yellow figs with pink centers. If he only knew how incredibly Un-Helpful he was. He offered some cuttings so I'll have to pay him a visit again soon to collect. Who knows what the variety really is. The trunks are huge though, about 10" caliper.

Wow, you can tell he's taken good care of that tree every winter!

Nice find!  I have discovered only one privately owned fig tree in this town.  Makes me sad that people here don't grow them.  I guess they are not a big part of Mexican, Biker or Cowboy tradition.  This town is pretty much a third of each.  People here look at you strangely if you don't arrive in a pick-up with boots and a cowboy hat.  A big dog accessory gets some respect... OH, and you must park your old dying truck on your dying lawn.........

Anyway, I carry the fig load for this area on my shoulders.  Nobody but neighbors will know.  They will partake.

Good luck with that blessed find!

Suzi

I could visit you Suzi and be part of the "in crowd as I have a F-l50 for hauling mulch and gardenstuff.  Maybe the umbrella laying on the top of the back seat will fool everybody and pass for a rifle.  Too hot for boots.  I have a sticker on the back that says "My Yorkie is smarter than your honor student".  Ah  I bet that would give me away.  Bikers and cowboys dont have  teeny doggies.  LOL   Joyce

Update!

I visited this nursery again today to see if the figs were ready and of course some where. I found 2 figs. One they call Naples Dark and the other is Naples Yellow.

The "Prosciutto" fig was not ripe, but he says it's his best. He also said I was welcome to cuttings of all 3 so you know I'll be back.

Hey Aaron. How were the flavors of Naples dark and Naples yellow? Thanks.

They were both a day or two away from being perfectly ripe, but they were both pretty good.  The Dark was very meaty and full, like a melon.  Nice figgy flavor.  The Yellow was more honey sweet but again nice and figgy.

Where in New Jersey are these figs located?

NICE !!!!!
